Thought I should post this... Keep in mind that I tend to treat way more aggressively than most.

Yesterday I found a Muscovy drake looking off, head pulled in, fluffed, scruffy looking, etc. His neck looked a little funny, like it's too thick, but nothing else seemed wrong until he pooped some green and yellow slimy stuff. Many things could cause this, but how can one know for sure without going to a vet? The treatment I decided to do was Baytril 20mg/kg once a day for five days, metronidazole 50mg/kg twice a day 7-10 days and Safeguard 50mg/kg once a day for five days. It's only been 16 hours and he's started eating and looks like a completely different duck. Poop looks much better, too!

That's great news Kathy, now do you think it was worms or a combination of things.

Quote: Good question... I think it's a bacterial infection and it's possible that worms contributed to it, but I will never know for sure. As for type of infection, it's probably one that's sensitive to Baytril. He's still sick, but so much better than yesterday.

Sounds good that you were able to get on it so quick, most don't have the meds to treat and have to wait days especially if we have to order to get meds. I have Baytril but not Metronidazole what exactly is that one?

Quote: Metronidazole is generic Flagyl, and we can buy it OTC for tropical fish and pigeons. It's used to treat many different things, but i poultry I use it to treat blackhead or possible Necrotic enteritis.

Petsmart website has something that will, so one might find it there. This product had 10 packs that contain 250mg metronidazole and 75mg praziquantil (tapeworm medicine). Each pack contains the same amount of metronidazole as one Fish-Zole tablet. Before you buy it verify that metronidazole is listed on the box.

Fish-Zole is cheaper, but this will help those that need to medicate their birds right away.

Good info have it in my book marks now. Thanks.

I also have amoxicillin and ketoconazole, but rarely use them, but if you're looking to build a kit, add Corid liquid and Safeguard or Valbazen.
