Brent, known to BYC members as BantamFan4Life has been a member of our community since June 2012. One of our all-rounders and also one of our most active members, he is known for his friendliness and wonderful chicken pics.

1. Tell us a bit more about yourself.

I have copious hobbies, so I'll name a few. I really enjoy: listening to music, blogging, photography, spending time with my animals, running, and reading.

2. Why and when did you start keeping chickens?

I started raising chickens four years ago (in 2011). At first, I started raising chickens for eggs, but I eventually realized how each chickens is so sweet and has a great personality. After a while, I had to get more chickens, and soon we had tons of chickens. Then, I discovered bantams, and I had to have some. I got two bantams, and I loved them so much. Of course, I couldn't just settle with two, I had to get much more. I ended up getting nine (and a Houdan that I adopted as a bantam because she was unusually small).

3. Which aspect(s) of chicken keeping do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy their individual personalities and tameness. There are few things more calming than when a chicken lets you hold them, or flies onto you. It is also nice that a pet can give you breakfast and a project at the fair.

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?

I'll name a few chickens that stand out. One, Lily, who has been my favorite chicken for years. She is always so sweet and calm, but she has a bit of feistiness in there. She is the only hen I have that crows! Two, Summer, who passed away in April of 2014. She was a very sweet bird, but she became ill in January. I thought she would die within weeks of her sickness, but she held on for a long time. She even became lame in March. I still do not know what she had, but none of the other chickens got sick. Also, Hans, who won Reserve Bantam, Best Male and a First Place ribbon at the fair. There are many more, but I'll just mention those three.

This is Lily, she always makes the best poses for pictures!

This is Summer, who walked for a month with one leg!

5. What was the funniest (chicken related) thing(s) that happened to you in your years as chicken owner?

There are two specific funny things that have happened. One, we had a Barred Plymouth Rock who laid an egg, yet it stuck to her fluff, so for several minutes, she had an egg stuck to her! Also, we had a Delaware who rubbed her head against a plastic lid on a cold day, and it stuck to her head for a few minutes!! I also think it is amusing that our chickens know their names and run away when they hear our dog's name, yet sometimes they can't figure out how to get into the coop!

6. Beside chickens, what other pets do you keep?

We have six rabbits, two cats, a dog, and in a few months, two pigs! We also raised three turkeys one year.

7. Anything you'd like to add?

Something I'd like to mention, is how great BYC is! It's so nice to have a community of chicken lovers who can give you good advice and share an uncommon interest--chickens!

I can see that poor hen with an egg stuck to her fanny.

Beautiful photographs and great interview....

I must admit that my bantams are my favourites...so friendly and amusing...as you well know from your own bantams!
