Kevin, known to BYC members as Kevin565 has been a BYC member since December 2009. She will most often be found in the Ducks and Geese forum sections, where she is known for giving good, friendly advice.

1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. (Family, hobbies, whatever personal stuff you feel like sharing)

I'm a fairly open person though I tend to be an introvert. If I'm not on BYC then I'm usually reading a novel or cruising Netflix. My only passion outside of poultry keeping would probably be Fashion. I believe it's a form of art that's highly undervalued in today's society. I'm an avid vintage Gianni Versace collector as well as a huge Louis Vuitton fan. I'm also hoping to pursue more traveling this year.

2. Why and when did you start keeping ducks?

My duck adventure started approximately 8 years ago. It all started with the gift of ducklings one Easter.

3. Which aspect(s) of duck keeping do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy many aspects of keeping ducks. There's not many thing cuter than the chatter of a baby duckling. I also enjoy the various personalities of my birds. I truly believe they can behave just like young children. You'll have some that are complete sweethearts while others can be a bit more naughty.

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?

I have grown to love all of my birds but two have always stood out to me. The first would have to be my very gander named Lily. To this day he has been the sweetest bird I have ever had the joy of meeting. He would love to have his beak stroked and would always hop up on a strangers lap. He didn't seem to have a mean bone in his body. His love expanded anywhere from his hatch mate to stray kittens that would come across his path.

The second bird that comes to mind would have to be a small white call duck. She was actually a rescue from a local feed store. She was extremely anxious when she first arrived but quickly took to a fellow female duck. They appeared to be best friends within hours. The two were inseparable from that day on. Due to her previous care giver she ended up having several health issues. Over time she gradually warmed up to me which made her medical care much easier.

5. What was the funniest (duck related) thing(s) that happened to you in your years as duck owner?

One of my most interesting experiences also happened to be on the weekend of my birthday. I decided I'd treat myself to a inground pond for the birds. It ended up being a bit more of a task than I was expecting. Upon clearing out the brush I actually ran across a snake. I fell right back into the hole and ended up spraining my ankle.

6. Beside ducks, what other pets do you keep?

I've raised: geese, turkeys, Java Green Peafowl, guineas, high content wolfdogs, great danes, a few rescue mutts, a rabbit, and various fish.

7. Anything you'd like to add?

I'd like to share one of my favorite quotes:

“The flower doesn’t dream of the bee. It blossoms and the bee comes.”
— Mark Nepo

Life is relatively short. Follow your passions and try to make the best of any situations.

I believe a picture is truly worth a thousand words so here's a few of various aspects of my life:

@Kevin565 , it's so great to see your interview and your wonderful animal family!!

You've been such a wonderful member of our BYC family and we've loved and appreciated your participation and support of our group!

Thanks for posting this great quote: "Life is relatively short. Follow your passions and try to make the best of any situations."

It's a great reminder, especially since it's so easy to get lost in the day-to-day stuff and find out that a ton of years have flown by!
