I'm building my chicken run on top of a wooden platform and am planning dirt on top. How deep does the dirt need to be? Is 6 inches enough?

These eggs are from my Buff Orpingtons. They often have what looks like dirt in them--sometimes stuck to the yolk, other times little flakes or specks floating in the white. I'm 100% sure it's not from the shell or dirt that fell in; it definitely originates in the egg. What could it be?
Hi! I am brand new to chicken raising, I have 4 Mille fleur d’uccles and 1 that I think might be an Easter egger (the saleswoman at TSC said they were all silkies, they are not 😂) they are 15 days old.
We live in Florida and it’s been about 85 degrees here, and I’ve been bringing the chicks...
On Sunday I noticed one of my barnyard mix hens feathers were hanging down her leg. She was eating and otherwise seemed fine. I couldn’t catch her and get a better look until yesterday. When I went to check on her I did notice that there was a huge lump/tumor hanging down. (From one side of her...
Hey, chicken peeps! I’m trying hard to finish constructing my chicken coop and run. I decided to dig out most of the pointy gravel in the run area and ordered a couple cubic yards of screened topsoil to fill in the run area instead. A company came and dumped a huge pile of the topsoil on top of...
So. I’ve had my chickens since March. I had 4 egg laying females and now I’m down to 2. Fox got my big girl and my favorite blonde girl 😭. And now I’m stuck with 2 who just aren’t doing a great job. I’m lucky if I get 2 eggs a day and when I do the yolks taste a bit like dirt. Now I’m just gonna...
So I’ve been asking a lot of questions about my chicks and I am very greatful that you guys are answering me! But I had a question for dust bathes for chicks but I will later on use when they are grown up. This is my first flock that I have had and I have been reading that they need dust baths...
I have read several times on here that adding a bit of dirt from the chicken run into the brooder would be good for the chicks and help them build immunities. I have a 2 week old and 3 at 3 weeks old in the brooder and one of the older ones is trying to dust bathe in the pine shavings. I put a...
One of my birds managed to get herself notably dirty. It's nothing bad or obstructive;
I've bathed her a couple times. I know how to bathe chickens, and I know it shouldn't be done too often because they need their natural oils. Is there something I should do, or just let her be?
I feel silly...
I pm looking to build a dirt bath for my chickens and wondering if top soil is okay to use. It says it does not contain fertilizer. What it does contain is I believe is soil/sand/mulch/gravel mixture.
I'm trying to make a dirt bath for my chickens and I have very little time left to do so. Is this dirt okay to use from home depot? I'm looking for something that has no chemicals or bad stuff that could hurt them
We are getting ducklings on Tuesday and I am building them a run as they grow indoors (too cold outside for ducklings right now). I have seen a few posts on here about run flooring choices, but nothing has shown me what would be ideal exactly.
I've heard:
Non slip Anti Fatigue mats (with...
Hi,
I’m looking for a way to keep my coop clean with such a small space. There’s a gravel flooring, which I sprinkle some hay on top, but so much poop builds up that it becomes a mountain. How do you maintain the cleanliness of your coop? I’ve heard that some people use sand.. looking for any...
I have 3 six-week-old silkie chicks who have lived indoors all their lives, with the exception of spending a few minutes some days roaming around on the grass. A few days ago, I introduced them to their coop in the backyard. I'm afraid that with them spending all their time on the ground...
Is a deep layer of pine shavings on top of small landscaping stones a suitable bed for a chicken run?
Or..
Plain dirt under/over chicken wire?
Or small rocks over chicken wire?
Looking for advice for health of chicken and ease of cleaning. Thanks!
Hi Everyone!
We are getting ready to move our chicks into their coop/run! Is there a certain type of dirt we should be placing inside the run? We were told dirt is the best option for the flooring as the hens like to bathe in it :) We are located in Orange County in Southern California.
Thank...
Hi all, it has been raining fairly consistently, but it's really going to pour through Sunday. My dirt floor coop is flooded (and most of the yard) and I had to wade in to open the doors. Can I just get sandbags to put around the bottom and add sand inside? I have a few medical issues and will...
So I'm getting some chickens soon and was wondering if I need to get bedding. The ground is all dirt. I have hay to use for the nesting boxes but I want to know if it is even worth putting hay down in the coop itself.
