    Feather loss?! Almost winter!

I’m worried about one of my black stars I noticed last week a lot of black feathers around the yard and thought I’d lost one to a predator but they were all accounted for. So after inspecting all the black chickens I found the culprit. I don’t know if it’s bullying or what I don’t think it’s he...

    Loss of my girls

About 2 weeks ago we had a dog kill 2 of my precious girls. How do you cope with it? Every squeak or squawk I’m running out the door like a mad woman prepared to fight a dog. We had another scare this morning but all my girls are safe. I feel like I can’t sleep or something will happen again. I...

Bullying, feather loss and spontaneous death

Hello fellow chicken keepers, My hubby and I have had several flocks of chickens over the last 14-15 years. The last 2-3 years have been very difficult though as our girls seem to be dying for no clear reason. Our last flock started with about 36 hens if I recall and we ended up with about 22...

    Another cautionary tale.

I know that loss is just part of the deal with a backyard flock. But this one took me completely by surprise: https://polloplayer.wordpress.com/2017/06/10/no-fairytale-ending/ My coop and pen are pretty secure. No incursions in eight years of flock keeping. So most likely human error. This...

Hens with poop stuck to their bums that seems to cause feather loss

All four of my hens have poop stuck to them. This is either causing feather loss or the poo is just weighing the feathers down. I can clearly see most of their cloacas because of the feather issues. They seem healthy and happy otherwise though. Can anybody help?
  7. Do Poultry Mourn Over The Loss Of A Flock Mate?

Do Poultry Mourn Over The Loss Of A Flock Mate?

Do Poultry Mourn? It has long been known that Elephants do indeed mourn their fallen comrades as do Giraffes and Apes. But do poultry and others in the avian species mourn? It has been very easy for human kind to think that animals or birds don’t have the...
