Hey all, I just wanted to do a article to follow up my post in the pecking problem thread. I ended up solving the problem of pecking in my flock and I'd been asked to share what I came up with. I'm sure they're lots of post on here about this, but I thought it couldn't hurt to share one more...
We just bought a house and the guy asked us if we wanted to keep the chickens. They looked healthy, so we said yes.
After cleaning out their filthy coop and run & getting the basics covered, we see we need to make it better, larger & more accessible.
I have three chickens I need for dinner...
One of my hens (I have 7) has her feathers removed/pecked off on her back, head and where her wings meet her body. I haven't seen the rooster mating with her nor have I seen hens pecking her. I'm worried about her staying warm when the weather gets down to zero. That's as low as it goes once...
So, I have three pullets, ages are around 9-10 months old.
They are the following breeds: Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, Cream Legbar. For the first 8-9 months of their lives, they were alone, happily cohabiting a crappy pre-fab coop from tractor supply (note: new BIG coop is almost built!). They...
G'day everyone
I'm hoping if I tell you a bit of my story, any of you could tell me if I made the right decision yesterday, (please try not to be to blunt with your responses as I'm feeling emotionally drained today)
As I posted in the new members area, I currently have 2 Plymouth Rocks, but...
Advise please! I'm sorry this is a little long.
I have a Leghorn hen (Pearl) 21 weeks old. She started laying a little over two weeks ago and her sister (Opal) started laying one week earlier, and they lay everyday. I also have two New Hampshires.
Pearl loves my attention. She has actually...
(photo 1 sort of shows her bald patch; photo 2 shows halfway point of removing the tape)
My young golden polish developed a bald spot on the back of her head. In reading through forums I chalk it up to being from getting pecked by the others. No blood but definitely missing feathers.
The...
Hey all,
We've had chickens for about 5 years now - we keep 5 girls in a fully enclosed 2 level coop, with a run downstairs, and a roost + 2 nesting boxes upstairs.
From time to time over the years we get cracked eggs, and when that happens, I always remember to put out crushed oyster shells...
I just stumbled upon an old school remedy for a way to repel other chickens from pecking and or rough treatment. (I have 13 hens, 1yr old +) but one of the slightly older chickens is mounting three of the younger ones to the point they have raw patches on their shoulders. Unfortunately, they...
We got three new POL hens two days ago, and they've all been vaccinated, wormed etc. There are three of them, and one is continually pecking feathers from the other hens' vent area. I know that I ought to do something about this, and I wasn't sure what. There are a few things I think it could...
i have two hens (Rhoad Island Red and Buff Orpington) that have been together since they were chicks. About three.weeks ago I found my Rhoad Island Red with a hole in her back about the size of a quarter and deep enough for three quarters to fit in. I doctored her and made a chicken Saddle to...
My little hen, at the bottom of the pecking order, keeps being pecked by the older and larger birds.
There are several pecking sprays on the market that purport to reduce pecking as the sprays have a nasty taste that discourages the other hens.
My question is firstly, do they actually work and...
Dears all,
I have 5 (six-week old) chicks. They acted normal from the hatch until 3 days ago. On Monday morning, when I checked the coop, I found one black chick with blood on her face and head. When I noticed them for ten minutes, the other four pecked at her (all of them). I quickly removed...
I am having issues with my 5 dark Brahma hens that I need help resolving. Sorry, this will be a little long.
Ms. Brown is the low hen in the flock, she gets picked on a lot but she was the first hen to show signs of being broody. Ms. Bossy, the top hen, decided that she was going to take over...
I have a new pair of chicks to replace the ones we had pass on, and one of them is an Australorp with a white ring around one of its eyes. They’re both newborns, and the other is pecking the Australorp’s eye and egg tooth. Every time she pecks the Australorp screams and runs, and the other...
Not sure what to do in this situation. We have a Rhode island red hen who keeps pecking us including my children and actually breaking the skin and drawing blood. She is about 6 months old. We only have 2 chickens, her and a buff orpington hen who hasn't pecked us at all.
What do we do?
Dears all,
I have a broody hen hatching 5 chicks. Now, the chicks are 23 days old. Until yesterday they did not have any problem and mom did her best protecting them. But, this morning when I woke up, I heard noise, once I went to the coop, I saw the mom pecking at two of the chicks brutally...
I have nine laying hens and three nest boxes. This morning, one of my hens kept chasing two other hens out of whatever nest box they tried to lay in. One of the hens got injured (she is bloody right behind her comb). I rescued the other one as soon as she laid. Two questions:
(1) How do I...
Wondering why my hens have a bald spot on the lower end of theirback. I saw online that chickens can molt around 18 months old but they are only around 12 months. Also with this time of year they shouldn’t be molting. I do have a rooster and maybe thought that was the cause but my rooster is a...
