If layer feed’s higher calcium levels are detrimental to non laying chicks, and is not generally used for meat birds either, would it possibly have a negative effect on a rooster in with the hens for breeding?
i have a standard rooster that mates with my Bantam hens....we had a girl go broody so we set some of the eggs and sure enough they are fertile. Has anyone done these crosses? What have been your results?
I have heard that chickens will typically stop laying eggs, essentially going into "menopause", at around three years old, and will then go on to live many more years without producing eggs. And my experience with chickens has always been in a situation where there is never a rooster.
