January 2nd, 1942
Dieppe, France.

I woke up to the sound of Master Sergeant Louie shouting at us to get out of bed; he is second in command to Sergeant Major Trent, who is the leader.
We came to Dieppe last night, a rest in our journey as reinforcements to the attack in Abbeville. As I hoped out of my mat of a bed, I glanced at the clock above Louie's head. Three o'clock in the morning, I hadn't slept four hours. M.S. Louie walks up to me while I polished my shoes for the journey, "Hurry up, we won't wait for you." He said with an acidic voice. "Yes sir." I said respectfully, we always had to put up with harsh unjust treatments without showing any emotion but respect and obedience. I hurried after him and the other men outside to the jeep. It was cold and the sky was grey, it looked like snow, or cold rain. Either one, it was going to be miserable weather.
I write this as we drive along a little dirt road. The landscape is an endless hilly field with the dirt road that stretches out in front of us, and an occasional bush or white rock sticking up out of the ground. "Hey Stephen, look at that," my buddy Garrett said to me, pointing to a little stone cottage with the roof caved in and vines crawling all over it. Garrett had a strong build and black hair which you could see was wavy despite the military short crop. He is fun guy, loves shooting guns, always lifting the mood.
We drove on for hours, and after awhile I finally managed to drift into a light sleep.

I crouched down in the mud and quickly reloaded my gun. The sound of shooting was everywhere, desensitizing my hearing.
I was lying down next Garrett (we were often paired together) behind a couple of logs, in a depression blown from a grenade. I quickly shot a guy I saw move behind a shrub. Just then a group of airplanes flew in a V pattern overhead. My heart pounded in my chest and I closed my eyes as they flew over us, dropping a line of bombs slowly falling to earth, right on the enemy. I quickly opened my eyes and watched as their men ran for cover, only to get caught in the great fiery explosions. I looked slowly over at Garrett, at the same time he looked at me, we smiled widely at each other.
