Suddenly Lostcry caught the scent.

Pausing beneath a forest of fern fronds, she stood completely still, sniffing the air. Irritated, she dropped the quail for a moment to better catch the scent. It was a he-cat, that much she was certain. Yet he smelled rather . . . strange. Her eyes narrowed. No matter how much she tasted the air, she couldn't quite place his allegiance.

Burying the quail carcass to bring back to camp later, Lostcry bounded off, silent even against the crackling leaves, towards the scent.

Rainwhisker gulped down a piece of fresh kill in camp, Brambleberry sat with him. His wounds were finally healing after the fight with RiverClan and he was able to sit up and eat on his own.

Tawnypelt headed out into the forest, her tawny colored pelt glowing in the sunlight.

Sunpaw backed queitly into the shadows before the tom saw her and bumped into Lostcry.

Lostcry moved her tail across her throat, motioning Sunpaw to be silent. With a reassuring smile, she crouched low to the ground and crept forwards, beckoning Sunpaw to follow.

With a glance at Sunpaw, Lostcry halted, concealed by a thick berry bush not five cat-lengths from the tom. It was a good vantage point. It was time to see exactly what this he-cat was up to. The rattlesnake caught her eye, and she looked back up at the tom, impressed. It wasn't easy to hunt rattlesnake, or kill one at all for that matter. It was clear that this cat was not an amateur.

At this thought, she wasn't sure whether to be relieved or frightened.

Suddenly Tawnypelt caught the scent of Lostcry and Sunpaw, mingled with the scent of a cat she didn't recognise. She clawed her way up into a tree and headed towards them
