Barnes' motivation? if what he said about Nobel was true, and he really is on the inhumans side vs. firesteins... motivation? uh.... Char..... regret? hiding info about her past? possibly he was looking for char maybe he's actually changed sides and is working for Firestein, and has gotten him self into a trusted possition with Janet. though why she was involved... maybe her husband worked with inhumans....
 
Probably what you should do is take a few days. write a few short stories of your own. You sit down with each of your characters in a room... coffee house, their kitchen, or police interrogation room. ask them who they are and what they want. like babylon 5 questions:

Yeah... I was kind of thinking her husband was involved in something to do with the recon mission, but I'm not sure what.

Hahahaha. I need to sit down with this whole fictional world and ask it these questions. Hey, you know I said the year was 2073 or something like that? Firestein would be a millennial.
