Lucas followed Bella, she obviously knew more about this world than he did.

Bella's knowledge was based on the RPs she had played and what research she had done to learn how her characters would act, not on real life. She searched for the scents that would tell her 'rabbit' or 'fawn' or something. She froze when she caught the scent of a young deer ahead of them.
