Hi Everyone!

I am Jerry. I am here to introduce myself and confess that I have weak moments and let my addiction block any neurons firing synapsis that let me do chicken math logically and it gets the better of me:lau So, from time-to-time I may reach out and ask for your support and have you take your rulers and whack my knuckles.

I am from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Lord no, I hatched my first birds when I was 10 (that may or may not have been like 40 years ago:D) and it was Bobwhite Quail, then took home some eggs everyone brought in to Biology class and hatched my first duck “Quackers” and boy did that lil thing imprint on me and followed me everywhere. I also hatched guineas for my Aunt Ruthie and chickens for this little old lady who lived in a shack and was my best friend (now there’s a story and how I come to know and love chickens). I, then, started hatching pheasants to release on my father’s farm. However, I didn’t start on chickens until 2017 and that’s when my addiction started…I’m hooked and it’s bad:wee

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Well, unfortunately as of today:hitI am down to 2 Roos, 4 Hens, 6 four week old chicks, and 9 newly hatched chicks with 3 currently hatching as I type this and ~12 more eggs finishing up their last couple days in the incubator.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Unfortunately, I recently lost my Vorwerks to stupid people who drive at high rates of speeds and today lost the last of my light Sussex. So, now I have mixed breeds for my 2 Roos and 1 hen, Olive Egger, Easter Egger, Buff Orpington, and a Black Jersey Giant. The chicks are a mix of all the above. But I want to raise rare breeds to help them get their numbers up and keep them from going away forever.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Oh wow so many, but definitely the fresh eggs and nothing beats watching Chicken TV, and of course when I drive up to the house after work and they all come running:love

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Work, work, and work. But my most favorite thing is taking the top off my Jeep and loading up my wild, crazy, back talking, hard headed Redbone Coon Hound “Duke” and driving to the river and hiking and driving the Blue Ridge Parkway with his ears flapping in the wind without a worry in this world. Ahhhh, those are the moments!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I’m an old member that never introduced myself; so a quick Google search back in 2017-ish after I got my first chickens. And so glad I found BYC because the community is so awesome and supportive and there’s loads of great info and help on BYC. Also, the Chicken Camaraderie and Fellowship!

Happy Chickening my new friends and may the Gods of Chicken Math show you no mercy but instead cheer you on to get/hatch 2 more or 4 more or 50 more:plbb
