Night had fallen and Victoria sat shivering, from cold, she hoped. She had tried to ignore the creeping feeling of dread which had seemed to grow as the light diminished. Taking a sip of water from her bottle she looked around her warily. "Come...." For a moment she thought she saw something, a light, and her heart leapt to her throat. But then it was gone again. She took another sip. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, her heart thumped a little faster. Again, in the corner of her eye. She jumped, dropping the bottle on the ground, her eyes darting around in the blackness. "Closer..." The breeze breathed.. Then she was standing, she didn't remember doing it, but now there she was, walking forwards. The fear was rising in her like a river about to burst it's bank, her entire body was telling her to run, to run as far and as fast as she could. But her feet kept moving forward. The shadow trees stood tall beside her, the invisible twigs and leaves crunching beneath her darkened feet. She cried suddenly, her eyes as wide as plates, her entire body stiffening. It's impossible.. "Go...." The branches creaked. As though in a dream, she wandered slowly towards the misty door which stood before her. It swirled and swam, and seemed to glow with some kind of ghostly light. It was calling her. She couldn't turn away. Her hand was shaking, wet with sweat, her heart thumping in her ears like drums. "Go... Go..." The wind whispered. "Closer... "
Her fingers reached for the fog, trembling, then there was a terrible coldness as a hand came out and pulled her in. She tried to scream but the air had been taken from her lungs in a single panicked gasp. Water. Water. I can't breath. It was in her eyes, it's icy hands wrapped around her throat. "Closer..." It wheezed. Her hands were stiff and numb, she clawed at her neck, the drums getting faster, faster, faster, faster.
"Gone..." She sighed sadly, the tears frozen on her cheeks.
Victoria woke with a start, her eyes opened, sweat running down her face. She gasped for air, sitting up and leaning against the fallen tree which had been her bed. The light was all about her now. It had only been a dream.
