A tall, slender girl leaned against her horse's back, eyes closed. Her slightly wavy dark brown hair mingled with the gelding's fire-red mane.
PHS Devil's Golden Aristocrat, or Tontigo, as he was commonly called, stirred after a few moments of resting.
The girl, Lauren, opened her eyes. "Hi," she murmured.
Tontigo whinnied in reply.
Lauren checked the clock right across from Tontigo's stall. It was 12:50 on a cloudy December Saturday, almost time for the jumping lesson she was to teach. Fortunately, before she had taken a few minutes to rest, Tontigo had been tacked up. "Good," she grumbled softly, straightening up. All of Lauren's grogginess seemed to fade away as she led her horse out of the stall, his newly-polished hooves causing resounding clacks to erupt from the cement floor.
Tontigo was a 16 hand chestnut Thoroughbred- the most beautiful of his kind, in Lauren's opinion. He had a fire-red coat, a short, silky mane, and a long, silky tail. Today, his mane was caught up in button-braids, entwined with navy blue yarn. His tail was braided, tied at the end with more yarn. Although it was just a lesson day, not show day, Tontigo liked to look good.
His owner adjusted her navy blue coat, twisted her French-braided hair into a tight bun, placed the black velvet-colored helmet over her head, and opened the door to the indoor arena. All of her students should be there soon. For now, Lauren took Tontigo around the course to warm up.
