My dad is type 2, so I admit to not knowing as much about type 1 either.

Type 1 diabetes is an outo-immune disease in which the body destroys its own insulin-producing system, the Islets of Langerhans (small island-like glands on the surface of the pancreas). It usually affects children and has no cure last I heard. A person suffering from Type 1 diabetes will need outside insulin all her life and must follow a carefully regulated diet.
