So sorry about Jack :hugs
Tes has some goof points about heat and humidity. The climate here is different but I can still tell you what I do. I provide my flock with ice water in the summer. It doesn’t actually cool them down, but they enjoy the cold water and therefore seem to consume greater amounts overall. And that helps. In the past some of my clean legged birds also enjoyed wading in shallow pools or pans of water. And I know Kiki hates treats but you can offer cold, high water content treats in the afternoon or evening. Again, won’t cool them off directly but can encourage hydration. Just don’t go crazy with the amount. And again, I am so sorry for your loss. It always hurts, and you have had a tough year already :hugs

Thank you. :hugs ❤ I just feel terrible and wondered if I could have prevented it and my dad is wondering why he didn’t go outside if he was that hot 😭

And huh! Interesting! So weird to me ha

And thank you! That makes sense! I’m guessing most of the heavy, dual purpose birds aren’t? Even though some say they are 😭

I thought we had good ventilation but maybe not. :(

We did put the quail cage in front of one of the windows but it’s all wire so I wouldn’t think it would block it? But idk. We do have other ventilation though too. But the roof is also black/dark so absorbs heat 😭

Big comb and clean legs are the most tolerant of heat. That said, my bantam brahmas made through 107 degree weather this summer.

Seriously though, this is not your fault.

That’s a relief it wasn’t something else but still sad 😭 any idea why he would have his head tucked like that? And that’s good to know the comb is normal! Thanks! Cause it was perfectly bright red just yesterday.

And thank you for the tips!! I’m gonna keep those in mind. We don’t have like an actual mister but I usually take the hose in the afternoon and wet the ground and it usually dries up again pretty fast from the sun but yesterday was somewhat cloudy for part of it so I wonder if it pooled? I did also spray him pretty good yesterday thinking it would help cool him off but now I’m wondering if I killed him 😭😭😭

Although that was pretty early before I let them out so I think he dried off by bed but idk. He wasn’t too wet anyway.

ETA: We normally never get that hot so he likely just wasn’t used to it maybe? My dad said he was panting a lot yesterday. And both days they mostly just laid around in the shade and dirt.
I'm sorry for your loss. It doesn't get humid here, but it does get pretty hot. I take extra waterers and fill them about 1/3 of the way and freeze them. When I fill them the rest of the way with water, they get ice cold water that stays cold for a while. I also take 2 liter bottles and fill them about 2/3-3/4 and freeze those. My quail lay against them when it's really hot.

This is an excellent idea!! Thank you!! I’m gonna try this!! The quail oddly seem to do well but I’m gonna try some of these things anyway and refill the dirt boxes with cool dirt. Maybe the chickens would like these things too. :love

Thank you so much :hugs definitely been tough! Have had so many losses this year :( and I know theoretically it’s not my fault but I keep wondering if I could have done something. My dad said last night when he locked them up, Jack stuck his head out the door and watched while he locked the punks up 😭 even though they’re in a separate coop he still makes sure everybody is in safely before he goes in. Or I guess made 😭

They’ve been stealing our tomatoes so I think getting lots of their own juice!

And that’s the weird thing... he had MASSIVE wattles and comb so I would have thought that would have helped!? But he was an Orpington so very fluffy and large.

Thank you :love we’re all so sad because we all loved him so much, even my parents.

I have no clue because he looks fine, like no injuries or anything. 😭 I went to let them free range today and found him laying there in the coop 😭 my dad didn’t hear him crow this morning either.

I’m thinking maybe it was the heat? Because it was crazy hot yesterday and the day before, like 97 with 105 heat indexes/feels like and he was a big fluffy oaf but idk for sure. Either that or the Mareks finally caught up with him but the other birds both showed symptoms and he was 100% normal until yesterday. 😭😭 maybe he ran around too much :(
Sorry, are you going to send this death for a necropsy?

I wouldn't wet the ground on purpose.
That is a good way to help coccidia grow.
