Sorry to add to the bad news...but since you have cats, you will need to be extra careful with the permethrin. Only spray in the chicken areas, and if possible, I think it is recommended to shower and change after you use it. You do not want cats coming into contact with that stuff

Theoretically maybe, but they can really only take down rabbits because rabbits are too stupid to consider fighting back. A cat would make it dinner.
As mentioned, they tend to follow rodent burrows into coops and then seize the opportunity. It’s usually only a problem for roosting birds, and of course they’re itty bitty little killers so they can only eat part of the neck. In the wild they would drag the kill away and stash it.

Speaking of rats and fingernails...
A friend of mine had a rat that gave manicures. She would get her bottom teeth under your nail and scrape all of the stuff under your nails for you.

I had a personal manicurist too, except she would chew mine right off.
