➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Sleep deprived me went shopping last night and bought another incubator and dog booster seats. It's a kit with a mini Brinsea and brooder.

Last time I was that sleep deprived, I decided to drive down to San Antonio to buy a dog, instead of just waiting a week or two for one to be available in my area. That's how I got Wasabi.
Here's a picture from when he was taking a nap with me before work.

Terrifying right!?! He was full blown snoring too. :gig
Poor Wasabi! It is so hard to get comfortable in that cone.

Beautiful Blues!

No tags here....yet. Will have to check with Wildlife about getting some. We have a total of 410 acres, running cattle on two properties. We take no prisoners when our livestock and poultry are threatened.

We had a mountain lion on our 160 acre wooded property; warned by one of the neighbor's while we were gathering possum grapes. That cat scream makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck and sends chills to your core...it sounded like a woman screaming too.

We have battened down all hatches, locked every coop, mounted the camera where it should catch three pen areas, set 4 snap traps chained to the posts, and arranged two snares on top of gate entrances. The guns are loaded by the back door too.

And we are hearing thunder with storms around us. Lily has begun reacting to the anxiety in out local weatherman's voice. Here she is in my lap before and after a clap of thunder. The whites of her eyes just kills me.

Poor Lily, I hate it when you can't do anything to soothe their fears. Have you tried putting a shirt on her. Sometimes it can calm a dog down.

Gave the girls a cantaloupe today cause it was soft/going bad and they loved it lol so much juice/water and seeds in the center they were drinking up lol

Still no broody GAHHH. but on the bright side, it is encouraging use of the other box lol

Almost up to 2 dozen eggs in the fridge now, 3 short, but my mom wants to give a dozen to a friend tomorrow so back down to one doz lol oh well. I'll just keep saving. They'll probably be gross by winter anyway I realized today lol

You can freeze eggs to preserve them. Here's an article about the different methods.

I forgot to tell you guys, my little Olive Manx baby had to go to the dr today :hit. She had upset tummy from changing foods even though I tried my best to avoid sudden changes. Anyway, she is now taking kitty probiotics and kitty pepto! no kidding! How cute is that?

KITTY PEPTO!!!!:lau That sounds like one of those young You Tubers who has her own channel and thinks she's like and expert in all gastric ailments lol! Say I'm wrong! You can't!:lau

Thanks! That's a good idea! I wonder if they'd taste gross being frozen though? That website seems really helpful though like it has lots of other stuff!

And how long do fresh eggs last if you don't freeze them? I know the article had said if you have more than you can use within a few weeks of buying them but what if you didn't buy them? What about fresh eggs? Cause I know sometimes store eggs can be a few months old. How long do fresh eggs last? And when does taste and/or color start to diminish? If it even does? Do fresh eggs go pale like store ones? They're refrigerated but not washed. We used to wipe them down but since the new coop and bigger, deeper boxes with tons of shavings, the eggs have stayed way cleaner. We have one hen that lays a poopy egg every time lately so we just give that one to the dog usually and don't clean the rest if that affects it.

First chick got out of the cup sometime during the night, guess it was feeling more lively. Second chick hatched itself without further help overnight as well. Third chick the membrane looked dry and couldn't see veins so opened more of the shell and left it sitting in the cup. It then kicked out of the shell in about 10 min. Last chick still looks like has veins to absorb so left it alone.

I was able to graft the first chick to the hen last night, and today after work the remaining 3 were fluffy and running around the incubator so I gave them to the hen too. I think it helped that they are the same color as chicks she already has but I was worried she might reject them. So far so good, now she has 16 little beaks to feed. This is at least her second time being broody and she did well last time so I think she can handle them all. Lots of color variation on these chicks, and I would say at least half should be easter eggers. We were wondering why we weren't getting any green eggs...

The frozen ones probably taste the same as long as they don't get freezer burn, but the texture might be different.
Fresh eggs can last for a super long time, but remember to date them, and used up the oldest ones first. The float test can tell you which ones are older, but the sniff test will tell you good or bad.
I can't tell you exactly how long the will stay fresh for you because it depends on a few different factors but you can always run an experiment!

I skipped ahead  I am back working in the same place I worked last, just a different job. So there are still lots of people I know. No more working holidays, weekends or having to take call and more money. So I can't complain. Thanks for asking, things went pretty well. How is everybody here doing? I feel like I have been away from y'all forever.:( :barnie
