First Sorry about S & W. You tried your best and sometimes things out of your control go against you.

I agree with @Frazzemrat1 that saying you are using the flashlight to look for live eggs because you want the freshest is gross but a good cover story.

You could ask at the market if they have a large styrofoam cooler from food shipments they don’t want. Get a new ghetto cooler started.

If not starting over I agree with others that putting glass over the hole in the top will make a great viewing window. I’m partial to plexiglass (I break things to easily)
