➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Happy Easter to all. Tonight I went to lock up my girls and one is on a nest with a fake egg and seems to be staying there. St. Bridget (patron St. of chickens) please let me have a broody so I can go buy eggs and put them and her in the broody cage. :fl:fl:fl:fl:fl:fl:fl:fl
I have a two night rule before eggs get introduced. Sometimes, even that, doesn't work out. That's why you need an incubator. I hear they are easy to make from scratch . . .

Thank you, but I am more comfortable letting the hen do her job. Have set 6 of my own eggs when I had a rooster under my own broody hen and got 4 chicks. So I trust my hens. I guess we will see if it works as well this time. Thanks for the advice though. :hugs
ETA: Will wait to see if she is really broody first. Praise to St. Bridget.

Totally respect that. My incubator needs arose because I had multiple broodies and not enough space for each one. I ended up with massive nest swapping and un-manned eggs. So, I ended up with hens sitting on golf balls, until I hatched vis-a-vis the incubator, and then the hens got the chicks. It actually worked out nicely. I got the pleasure of watching the hatch, and the broody hens got to raise the chicks.

We have a broody cage with it's own little run for the hen, still within the the chicken area of our backyard and next to the roost area so everyone can see each other. Mom and chicks are enclosed and safe but can still interact through the wire. We live in the city, so I can't have a big flock, although I have had 16 chickens at one time and an down to 6 with a few years on them, so am ready to hatch a few more.

That's a great way to do it. I love raising the broody and brood along with the main flock.
