➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Also I just noticed the eggs alone are $25 PER EGG!?!?!? :th and $40 per chick... I... :th the more I look into it, the more it is honestly starting to seem like they are just trying to make big bucks/get rich off their birds haha

But they are definitely pretty. I hope eventually they maybe can get recognized cause they do seem cool but I guess now they would just still be considered mutts? Doesn’t mention what breeds were used to create them. Probably because they want you to believe they’re a real breed.
They definitely have a fairly specific phenotype, but they're far from identical. I wouldn't class them as worth anywhere near that much, but that goes for most dog breeds I see out there as well. Maybe I'm just a tightwad.

That makes sense!! And yeah, I wouldn’t either! Lol the per egg price seems a bit outrageous haha and nahh I don’t think you are!! You’re right. And as for dogs, most of them are crazy expensive but there are breeders who charge less thankfully lol but have to know where to look. Even rescues and mutts are getting outrageous these days

Welcome back! Glad your summer project went well and is over. Glad you stayed safe! Such a terrifying thing to go through! I can't even imagine. Scary thing as well to go through with the fainting. I know I'd want to know what the heck is going on so it doesn't happen again. I mean, what if it happened while you were driving? All of us on here are gonna be like, "Did you ever go to the dr and figure out why you fainted like you did?" :old It's because we care. :hugs I think you had briefly mentioned Sugar before but I am not sure. She is such a sweet looking thing! :love Since she is a rescue, does she have a forever home with y'all or are you rehabilitating and then finding a forever home or what? Do you have any other mini's?
I wouldn’t say the summer went...well. I just have to be extremely careful of what I say to be honest. It would take a lot, and I mean a lot of convincing to get me into another research program.

I know I know, and frankly I’m not sure when it will happen. I’ve begun to feel better though! I’m thinking it was due to the stress of the summer/trip/el Paso heat and lack of sleep that I incurred over the past two months. I haven’t slept this much in a long time.

As for Sugar, she has a forever home with us since she has a collapsing trachea. She has to take special medicine and have special accommodations because of it. It’s very morbid to say, but eventually it will get to the point in which she won’t be able to breathe anymore, and so we are the ones going to let her live out her life being a happy pasture baby.
We do have two other minis as well! Two half brother minis who are also rescues, Olly (castrated as a 3 year old with us) is in love with Sugar.

That's our girl! Great attitude...no looking back!
You are leaving this school and moving into your next program.

Glad you are going to get this checked out...don't take chances with your health!

Definitely need to get a good baseline set of tests done!

YYYYUUUUUMMMMMMMM!!!!!!
Hi Nana! I know I know I know. If it’s not going to be clearing itself off anytime soon then I’m going to get checked out.

In all honesty, I’m terrified of what the doctors have to say. I also desperately need to see a doctor about my knee since I can barely sleep without waking up in pain because of it, but I also don’t want to deal with surgery.

Had some storms come through yesterday. Was crazy lightning! Strong winds. It downed some good size branches and a dead tree. One in the duckling area, a couple in the dog pen and 1 that wasn't by anything. The 2 in the dog pen downed the fence from the weight but thankfully once hubby took the chainsaw to it, he and my son were able to right the fence back up. The dogs don't try to get out so it will be ok for now until we can make it a bit more sturdy. The one in the duckling area came over the fence and bent the edge of their pool. Thankfully didn't bust the pool tho. The fence was fine over there. Spent the day picking up small branches and twigs.

I have a new layer. It's Daisy, my Austra White.

She is laying a cute little cream colored pullet egg. :celebrate Now I am just waiting on Hazel (welsummer), Iris (blue, er I mean black, andalusian) and Violet (blue ameraucana). Violet is still so tiny! I think she is going to be a late bloomer.

Oh, and speaking of ducklings... 1 girl and 4 boys. :th Out of 7 eggs. :barnie I have ZERO doubt. The one girl quacks and grunts all the time. The boys are all raspy. So I will be giving away 4 males. I'm not going to have these processed. I don't regret doing the others but I think we'll just give them away this time around. I have to say, I am a bit disappointed. I was hoping for at least a couple girls. Oh well. They are pretty bonded with each other so I will give it a little more time before getting rid of the boys. They are only 6 weeks old at the moment.

Side question for y'all.... those of you that process your own birds. Do you have special equipment or nah? Like, do you really need a scalder or a feather plucking machine? Are they just helpful/bonus or definitely must have if possible? I think a cone would be the humane and useful way to go. Of course a very sharp knife. What are the basic items you would recommend to someone?
I totally forgot that your rescued duck hen (and forgot her name??? :barnie My memory is totally shot) was sitting on eggs last time I was around here. Gosh how time flies by! I’ll have to go look for pictures. :)

Oh!! Her name was Annabelle right or something similar? I think.. It took me four days to remember my general chem professor’s name when my director was asking me questions after the faint, I probably need to be checked out. :hmm

As several others have mentioned...you don't need much to process your own birds.
I set up two sawhorses with a piece of plywood for a table. I cover that with a big heavy duty plastic bag so I can rinse it between birds.
I hang the hose nozzle at one end.
On the table I have several sharp knives and a butcher boning knife and a big plastic bowl of water for rinsing the cleaned bird and hearts, liver and cleaned gizzards. These then go in an ice chest with ice and cold water. I change the water in the bowl with each bird processed.
I set up a hot plate with a big pot of water for scalding the bird
A five gallon bucket for gut waste
A bag for skins and /or feathers if I pluck.

Birds are decapitated or neck vein drained depending on cleaning method. If I'm skinning the bird, I decapitate and hang to drain. If I'm scalding and plucking, I vein drain.
All birds are hung over a bucket using baling twine.
I cut off the wing tips and feet when I start cleaning.

The first one is done and ready to wrap...did the top one first so I could wrap it and then work on the bottom one.

Both wrapped separately so I can check them individually.

Genius way to control the bird. Thanks for sharing.

Better to know and deal with whatever they say than to stress and worry! I haven’t heard what is wrong with your knee but I got a knee pillow you put between your legs when you sleep and it relieved the pain in my knees. Only had to use it a few nights and it was problem solved. Just a suggestion. :)

Sorry it didn’t go as well as you were hoping :hugs

But those minis sure are adorable!!

I really want minis haha but then again I also want goats, sheep, ducks, quail, rabbits, and several types of house pets but I won’t even get started on those. :lau

Anyway, I think minis are adorable but the expense is part of what’s putting me off from them. I mean... food wise, they would probably be cheaper than a regular horse, and we have tons of grass (and I can plant special pasture grass if necessary) and can get hay but farrier and vet costs and everything are all still the same as a full size horse, right? Horses are so expensive. :hit

I would love a full size one or two eventually too but they’re so expensive. And I don’t have much experience. I figure with minis I could get experience first especially with like training and stuff. And they’re cheaper initially like purchase price.

But I might just start out with lessons and/or leasing to get my horse fix haha

But at least with goats and stuff I could trim hooves myself.

I totally understand that. I am in a somewhat similar situation, though not as severe. I suspect I have carpal tunnel but I too am terrified to go to the doctor and also don’t want surgery so I haven’t yet.

Probably should though seeing as my hand has been numb since like Sunday....

OMG definitely get that checked out!! The brain is no thing to mess with!! You could have a concussion or some serious lingering side effects or something!
