Oh my gosh, he is beautiful. I absolutely love his markings. Do you know how old he is?
Such a handsome boy.

My friend had gerbils when we were kids and they ate each others legs off

I have heard many, many similar stories about gerbils. They’re a tad neurotic. Not my favorite.

She gets fresh vegetables every day, so I’m not sure why I’d put myself through the extra work.
Not really, that I know of. Some can learn their name. They’re intelligent though and will learn through conditioning.
I swear IV can hear the sound of a worm container being cracked from miles away.
Gerbils are flighty and very bad chewers.
Rats are easier and more personable.. and I could tell you everything you need to know and more about husbandry.
Chickens are infinitely easier to care for than any rodent/weasel/lagomorph I’ve ever owned. The little furries are all about cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.
Shoveling out a chicken coop every now and then doesn’t even compare to the amount of spot cleaning, deep cleaning, laundering of bedding, and litter training you will do with the others.
Not to say they aren’t worth it. Just that so many people get small, crappy cages for their rodents and never clean it out and wonder why their house smells like piss.
Leopard geckos are nocturnal so theoretically only need an under-tank heater, but a UVB will make them prettier and healthier.
Finn is the most low maintenance animal I’ve ever owned. Ever.

Ferrets aren’t rodents.
They eat rodents.
Males smell worse than females, but every ferret you can find in the USA will be desexed and descented. This means they can’t express their scent glands (like a skunk), but they can still be a little oily and musky.
Not hard to control with regular washing of bedding and litter training.
FYI, most ferrets need to be kept with other ferrets. Ferrets like Peter and da weasel are exceptions.

I meant that they can and will chew through a plastic or wooden cage. Thanks! That’s very helpful. I don’t mind so much if they can’t be handled too much, sure they’re really fun to watch lol, and I don’t mind that so much, not really planning on having them out a lot or if I do in a safe chew proof area, and for a while I was actually stock piling every toilet paper and paper towel roll.stopped doing that but still have TONS all set for them to chew through and tunnel to their heart’s content.

Good girl! And oh yeah I would definitely never do that!! I’ve actually done tons of research on most of the various small animals and have learned a ton about their care and how truly inappropriate those cages are! Like hamsters for instance. They’re not really big climbers and stuff and actually need a rather big cage to run around and burrow and everything so I haven’t gotten one because I can’t provide the size cage or care they should have. Same for guinea pigs and rabbits, etc. and guinea pigs are actually extremely social and much happier with a friend as well as room to exercise. Which is probably why so many kept in those little tiny cages all alone are fat and “lazy.” Probably just no room to really move or exercise and depressed at not having any friends haha and those cages for parakeets are awful too. Tbh I think most of the cages they sell for the small animals are incredibly cruel and inappropriate. Also way way overpriced. You can get a much bigger and better cage elsewhere or make your own for far cheaper!! So really there’s not even an excuse to use the crap cages anyway cause better ones are cheaper!
Finn has an under tank heater, a UVB, and a very mild heating bulb because our house is cold.Maybe after I move the goldfish to the pond I could take their tank, clean it up, and use it for a leopard gecko or something?? Would that work or do they need something bigger? It’s a 20 gallon long.
Also, can you house multiple leopard geckos together or do they have to be housed separately?
Hmm that’s true! Definitely a lot of extra work for no good reason! Ha
Thanks, that’s interesting and good to know. No matter if they can’t learn tricks. Sure they’re still interesting.

I do love rats though but my parents hate them and my mom said she won’t sleep with a rat in her house so unfortunately I can’t get any now which is why gerbil was next aha they oddly approve of those.
But rats are honestly my top choice for rodents. I may just wait until I can get the rodent I want haha
And I would love tips or info or anything. Though I used to follow someone on Tumblr who had a bunch of different ones at varying times, always had at least like 4-6 and I got to watch some come and go, and anyway, she was awesome and took great care of them and I learned a ton. Then I left the site. But she had this big huge double Critter Nation with fleece lining down and all sorts of hammocks and those rope perch/climbing things for birds and all sorts of awesome stuff for them. It was amazing. If I ever get rats, that is the kind of set up I would get. Also learned you can’t just have one because they are so social. Learned that for guinea pigs too and C&C cages for them not the crap ones they sell and also ex pens for rabbits haha
And that is very true!! The spot cleaning and about of daily and even weekly care is crazy and nothing compared to the chickens!

I would also buy a big flight cage for parakeets if I ever got them or build an aviary. And give them plenty of fresh fruits and veggies and healthy seed or a mix of pellets and seed not the colorful crap. Same for hamsters actually. None of that colorful inappropriate junk food that they can pick what they want or get fat on haha
I have this all figured out.
I’m a bit obsessed with giving every animal the best possible care even if it’s not “traditional.”
Hence why even my bettas and goldfish have had tanks, filters, heater (except the goldfish cause they don’t need one), etc. instead of bowls or cups.
Also why I’m planning on putting the goldfish in a pond soon. They’ve outgrown their tank.
Now, I did used to have bettas and goldfish in bowls. I’m not perfect. But then I researched a ton and corrected my mistakes. Heck, even the Betta wasn’t perfect at first. He was in a “tank” but it was only like 2.5 gallons or 5 gallons or something like that, was completely barren except a few plastic plants and the heater was crappy, and he was suffering and faded colors. I learned from some people about why he was sick and stressed and fixed it. Bought him a 10 gallon tank, a better filter, ordered a good quality heater that actually worked, ordered some live plants to fill the tank, etc. even learned about amazon tea tree leaves to help him. He miraculously recovered, got such bright colors and full tails/fins, and was absolutely gorgeous.but then he sadly eventually died
But anyway, my point is I am determined to care for my animals properly and am continuously learning and correcting my mistakes and trying to improve/make things better for them rather than just doing it half ass or accepting it as is and claiming they’re “fine” or whatever like some people haha
So I probably could handle about any animal but it also comes down to what I want to do. And I do think rodents and caged birds are a lot of work.
And thank you!! That is good to know!! Does Finn have a UVB bulb?
And wow that is awesome!! I may have to get one then. They are gorgeous too haha

Sorry for the huge novel.![]()

I meant that they can and will chew through a plastic or wooden cage.
Just a heads up.
Good girl!
The USA’s treatment of pocket pets in general disgusts me. We are so far behind the times in terms of proper husbandry, it’s disgusting.
I could rant about this all day but all I’ll say is kudos for knowing about proper hamster care. Hamsters and turtles are some of the most neglected animals in American homes and no one gives a shit.
Finn has an under tank heater, a UVB, and a very mild heating bulb because our house is cold.
20 gal long is perfect for a leopard gecko. They can actually get stressed when their territory is too large.
Females can be kept in groups with a maximum of one male. Males should not be kept together.
Your novels are too long.
