No worries, most people don't and it varies a lot by department and institution anyway. Before I can "advance to candidacy" (official acknowledgement that I have completed every single PhD requirement except finishing my dissertation) I have to jump through a bunch of hoops. The very last hoop is my proposal defense. A dissertation proposal is a very long detailed plan of exactly what you are going to do for your dissertation, the theoretical and practical justification for your plan and typically also some preliminary data. You send it your dissertation committee (three faculty members that have agreed to supervise you) and if they agree you are ready then you can schedule your defense. The defense is a 45 minute powerpoint presentation of your plan to your committee and anyone else that wants to come (other faculty and students mainly). Then there is a public Q&A. Then the committee grills you behind closed doors. If you pass, then you can advance to candidacy. If you don't....it is bad.
Bones. You're hardcore. I don't envy you... you're rad, though. I think you should wear that dusty pink hat during your presentation.
