➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

It looks like a HUGE quail to me once it's naked! Sorry, I didn't think to photograph the bird, I was so upset with the whole deal!!! Here's you some marinating shots. It had 1 puncture wound and a broken neck.

I really like them, I only had 4, but Buckwheat got killed by my dog & now this one by the owl. Down to just 2, they think they're chickens, they were all hatchlings together. I've got 8 guinea eggs that I put in lockdown just this morning. I love their chatter, it annoys some people.

I was surprised when I didn't encounter eggs or testes while processing this bird! They hadn't started laying or anything but I guess I thought I'd find something particular inside to identify it as female/male. I didn't dissect it though. It was below 30°F and my mom & I hadn't planned on processing guinea out by the burn barrel in the dark in our PJs! Good times!
Their chatter can get very loud but I think I could handle it if they were outside. When I went to a swap somebody had them and they wouldn't shut up and they kept getting louder and louder when I was talking. I couldn't stop laughing.

Dont get ducks... You were just talked mg the other day about how you're make ng wrong decisions without much thought... Ducks is another one of those bad decisions!

Stick with what you know... Chickens. Ducks are a lot of work and they're not like chickens at all. You have to clean more, feed more, clean again... They need a water supply all the time besides when they're sleeping. The water gets dirty and you need to change it 3+ times a day. If you keep them with chickens they'll dirty all their waterers and you'll have to go out all the time and clean the because the chickens will refuse to drink the muddy water... The ducks don't care though. They make holes in the lawn everywhere that you trip and almost break your ankle in.

IF you ever got a duck I'd recommend a muscovy... They're not a water duck and they're very clean... But they fly so you'd have to clip their wings or you'd have to keep an eye on them. They still need a water supply at all times but that's just to clean their bill and for food consumption.

Yeah, I wouldn’t. Mostly just dreaming/thinking haha

Although that said...

I am giving it thought this time, hence why I’m on here instead of on a hatchery website hitting the order button. :D :lau

But I don’t think I would get them. At least not now. I do think I want them eventually but they sound like way too much work and way too disgusting. :lau

But the biggest thing is I would have to build an entirely separate area which I don’t really feel like doing right now and my dad doesn’t like them.

So gotta wait.

Muscovies sound nice and a lot cleaner but tbh I hate the look of them.

But I’m gonna wait on any of them hah

Also, that said, my chickens actually prefer to drink out of mud puddles than clean water?? Whenever I dump the old water out or refill it with a hose and it overflows or whatever, they always drink from the nasty, poopy, mud puddles that form instead of the nice clean water bowl.

@Kiki, only five more to reach 80K!:pop

Depends where you get you muscovy. Coco will never have the amount of carnucles other muscovy have because her breeder has made hers with less.

They do seem to want to drown out other noises or voices.

These 2 left here now are moping about, it was the alpha bird that got killed. They're staying super close to the other pullets & their roo friends.

That's so sad... You need more :D
:loveI just lockdowned 8 guinea this morning, I'm hoping all 8 hatch. (And 9 chicken eggs, 1 or 2 may've quit early though).

:barnieI want someone to tell me what on earth I was thinking when I decided to set 120 quail eggs!!!

:th
