➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

DH poo-poohed the idea of quail, but got totally excited when I mentioned homing pigeons.

How much space do they need?
not as much as chickens because they 'free range' in the sky! lol.
How big of a loft totally depends on your goals with them. :D
Rule of thumb is 2 cu ft per bird. It is good to have at least 2 sections(which I do not) so you can separate genders or flyers from breeders.

BABIES you ask for babies you will get bear with me heres 11 of them

Checking back in since the long weekend is now sadly over and it's back to work :sick. Rained on and off most of the weekend, of course. Finished up the "big coop" for the larger young birds this weekend, played a lot of "where did you escape from" with them til we figured it out, and got a 2nd tarp just in time for the rain. Moved our 100 baby chicks into a larger space that has turned out to be a great brooder. Sadly lost 6 of the larger chicks during the rain - they got crushed on the bottom of a chick pile. Lost an EE, Jersey giant, the fiance's favorite little bantam roo, and a couple others. Moved a huge dog igloo in there and they love it. Spent a lot of time watching Adventures of Dr. Buckeye Bottoms on Saturday, Dr. K's Exotic ER on Sunday, and a couple movies Monday during the rain. Got a few free mallard cross drakes, and 2 pretty, giant roos (one roosts on the fiance's brush guard) from someone he knew on Friday. Sold our trio of Cayugas, and found the chocolate Muscovy's new nest - after losing about 10 eggs she got smart and hid it from the old farm dog Biscuit - she's got a pile of eggs under her so our fingers are crossed she hatches a good bit out. The blue/green one still has a nest in the open over next to our rabbit cages - loses an egg to the dog, and lays another there :idunno

This weekend we'll be going to the livestock auction, also is the fiance's birthday. May take the free drakes and 1 of the roo's with us, and might pickup a dozen or so quail eggs to put in the incubator. We want a lot more than a dozen quail, and taking a risk at the auction on whether or not you're getting good eggs (the chicken ones we got had a decent hatch rate), but they usually sell for 50 cents - $2 dozen depending on the day/turnout & I want to put some in the bator and see what happens. Last time someone bought about 500 quail eggs for $100. Also may buy some more rabbits, and if there's any good breed hens we want to add.

Loved seeing some fluffbutt pictures while catching up :love, and hope everyone had a nice weekend :)

Oh and as for the voles/moles/things, one of my 2 cats I had growing up used to be a pro at catching them. And then giving them to his brother, who'd proceed to swallow them whole :sick

Miss Sunshine turned 13 yesterday!

Leave for work in the morning, have 18 bunnies.
Get text at lunch time, we now have 28 bunnies.

We have a big white & gray rabbit I've been calling Mama that had 5 fat lil babies about a month & a half ago. She's the only one who's babies have survived (and these 5 grew like weeds!!) out of the 3 does who've had any (one had 4 this weekend, didn't make a nest, & was trying to crush them :( kept stepping on them back and forth). We were going to wait about 8 weeks between birth & putting Mama back in with the male ... apparently they were busy before we separated them - she had 10 more in her pen when he went outside to feed the farm. :th

But, it's a good thing. Hopefully she is a good bunny mom yet again, and there'll be 10 more in the group! We are trying to get a small rabbitry going on the farm, she is doing her part LOL. Maybe just a little faster than we anticipated ;)
