Besides those two examples, there are several herpesviruses with a certainly limited or only suspected ability to cross species barriers. Those include Saimiriine herpesvirus 2, Phocid herpesvirus 2, Equid herpesvirus 1, Epstein-Barr Virus, Marek’s disease virus, and pseudorabies virus.


So does this mean that yes humans can get the Marek's disease herpes virus?

Based on similar diseases, it is theoretically possible, but I can’t find a single case of it so I would confidently say no. There’s already a couple threads on BYC about it but who knows.

I am finding a lot about how dangerous the leaky marek’s vaccine is, though. Yikes!

Kind of but not really. They’re host specific, so the species that causes STDs can’t be transferred to birds and vice versa, as far as I know.
