Good thing I just bought a new pitchfork for turning hay. So much for a low maintenance build, hm.

I have to say your run looks amazing, I have been using the deep litter method in my coops for 3 years, primarily using hay, now not regular hay, I am raising sheep and order alfalfa blend hay so not so woodsy..So far I have not experienced any molding issues, I completely fork out once a year, and every 3 months or so I pitchfork out the top 8 inches or so, this would be gold for my garden but I just toss it into the run and my girls pick and scratch it to nothing.

A lot. It’s a 20x60ft area, the hay averages about 1-1.5 feet deep and it’s pretty compacted.
I know, it was maybe pretty stupid.. the more I think about it the stupider I feel. My in-laws gave me the bale for free and I needed a cheap way to build the low run’s ground up fast. Mud and flooding was a big issue last time.

I never knew it was bad. My run is probably 50 x100 with a big Bradford pear tree in the middle with what is now a dirt floor. When it gets rainy I toss out a couple of bales of straw if I can get it, hay if I can’t. They scratch and trample it and eventually it disappears. Then I add a couple more bales. Never had a problem with it. Not even trying to do deep litter, just trying to keep it from being a mud bath.

Off topic but, does anyone have any experience using hay as deep litter?
I know it molds and I know it tends to become a matted poop carpet. But.. it’s already in the run, it is what it is and I’m wondering how to prevent problems early on. I don’t know where to get “aged wood chips” in bulk. Would a bit of leaves and pine needles mixed in help at all?

If you call your power company they may be able to give you a truck load of wood chips if the they are trimming trees by power lines. I know my power company gives them away for free

I've got to go supply shopping. It was the plan for today but I haven't decided how committed I am yet.
