➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I walked out to feed the quail and see something staring at me through the cage. Took me a second to realize it wasn't a quail. It happened so fast I didn't get a good look to see exactly what type of hawk was sitting on my porch railing staring into their cage. It flew off as I screamed and ran back inside.

My question (first time I've seen a hawk in my yard) is will the damn bird come back and try to break into the cage? Do Hawks rip up hardware cloth?

My chickens are now on lockdown.
Hate Hawks! Have had them fly into the barn and enter the hen house to take a young bird. Actually had roosters fight one down to the ground where I could hit it with a shovel.

You are a silly. Hawks are little bitty things, they can't hurt you, and if they tried, you could just wring its neck.
Not all of them are small. Chicken Hawks yes, but Red tail and Coopers are huge! Having those talons aimed at you is frightening. In an attack dive the hawk is focused on its prey and it can do you harm if you intervene.
An owl if it feels threatened will attack. Our friend lost his eye when an owl nailed his face while he was in a deer stand.

:idunno It’s illegal to kill a hawk here
Oklahoma state statutes allow killing a hawk that is predatorizing your flock...in the act of attacking.
All Eagles are totally off limits.

Back of the head. Hard crack and they're knocked out.
Hit it hard enough so it doesn't scream.

For those of you who have done rabbits and quail, why do you prefer one over the other or do you still keep both?
I prefer rabbit. Hubby prefers quail.
Not doing either right now.

Night crawler worm boxes under the rabbit cages yielded great fishing worms. Quail poop is too "hot" for immediate use...used it in the compost pile.

Rabbits yield larger meat portions....must have more quail to yield the same amount of meat.

Feed bills were about equal. Housing cost about the same....unless you put in an outside living quarters. Quail are more messy than rabbits.

Rabbit hides can be tanned or sold...not so for quail.

Quail eggs were a pain to peel. Three quail eggs equal one banty egg or five quail eggs equal a hen egg.

It’s been cold for Texas! It’s supposed to get down into the 20s tomorrow night.

We had our first hard freeze Friday night with 31 degrees and it was 29 last night. Supposedly we could get a snow/rain mix tonight. Earliest ever.
I combined all the ducks in the big pen with the enclosed coop. The drakes were ready to process with their extra weight, but being warm at night is definitely a plus. The girls have more boys with whom they can snuggle. :love
One big hen should hatch her chicks tonight and the banty hen will hatch her babies next week...sure were late brooding. :jumpy
The garden is done for the season except for the collards and carrots...the ducks ate all the lettuce, spinach, beets, radish, turnip and Pak choi plants that were up. :he It is too late to replant anything but lettuce. :hit

Sure. Do you want exact measurements or "how grandpa does it"?

This time was better than the first.
Put your 5 quart cast iron dutch oven on the stove. Coat the bottom with bacon drippings. Add 1 onion. Big if you like that. And a bunch of cubed squash or pumpkin. This time I used 6 cups. the more the creamier. The less the waterier.
Sautee until the onions are see through.
Add 1 can (a little over 1.5 cups) tomato something. I used crushed Italian tomatoes this time. Anything but ketchup. Ketchup is from Satan.
Add 1 pint chicken bone broth. Or more to get the level up. Water if not. But broth is best for umami.
Since the squash is basic, I added 3 splashes of balsamic vinegar to mellow the tomato acid. I think it helped. ACV is good too.

Add salt. Start with a teaspoon and stop when you are happy.
Simmer until the squash is falling apart. 2-6 hours depending on how long you've got. Stir occasionally.
I add the jalapeno peppers sometime during the simmer. Whole to eat them. Crazy Lady doesn't like it when she finds a seed. Chopped if no one fusses or you want the pot for yourself.
Add last weekend's, home grown, rotisseried Cornish cross remainders. I had 2 cups. Chopped to bite size. about 30 minutes before serving. Longer if you want it to soften and fall apart. I like firm.
Add spices. I put 6 Basil tops and 3 parsley leaves this time. Rosemary &
Black pepper l
ast time.

If you add the spices early, they cook to nothing. I wanted the flavor.

I did 2 cans of tomatoes last time and that was tomato soup. Meh.

Serve with warm buttered toast. Homemade French bread is great for this. Chopped basil or parsley on top. Green onions would be awesome. I want to try this with a dollop of scrambled eggs stirred in. I think this would be great. We are molting, so passed on the eggs. They are for breakfast.

Enjoy. This is a work in progress. If anyone has suggestions, there will be a tasting dinner & discussion at Dawn's house in 4 weeks. Please RSVP. :D

Don't turn the heater on. Make soup. Sorry, gumbeaux. I wanted to bake bread too, but still have store bought.

Next on the list is pumpkin harvest cake with the cornucopia of squash.
:droolthanks Nutty.

If you can share, I'd love the recipe for the harvest cake.
