Sand is because it can flood back there so for drainage purposes.I don’t know that the sand will be necessary, it should dry out pretty quickly as is, especially since it’s under cover, and I would recommend some wood chips if you can rather than shavings not because I think that shavings are bad but only because I read that for deep litter and composting the chips are better than shavings because they break down faster than shavings due to the varying particle sizes in chips as opposed to the uniform size in shavings. Idk why that is but I believe it because my piles of shavings take FOREVER to break down lol like many many many months even years lol but it should work fine either way
