➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

We finally made a trek over to Clarksville (a little over an hr drive away) so we decided to check out Rural King. I've never been in one. It was HUGE. Tractor Supply on steroids. Maybe that is a little bit of an exaggeration but not much lol. I saw a woman walking towards me and I heard peeps. I was like... CHICKENS!!! They have chickens in! Zoom! :wee I was off lickity split trying to find where the peeps were hidden. Took me a couple minutes but I finally found them. They had "Giant Cochins", which I am assuming is just standard instead of bantams? Idk. They were cute. And I believe they are supposed to be sweet bundles of feathered fluffiness. They had a bunch of Polish in. Those head poofs are so stinking cute! And had some "Ameraucana". They actually spelled it that way, which is confusing to me. Tractor Supply spells it like "Americana" so I know that it is Easter Eggers. The RK spelling is of the actual breed but I still think they were Easter Eggers. They had some Spitzhaubens. They had a couple other Bantams. They were out of a lot but I noticed they have such a diverse selection of breeds. Much more varied than Tractor Supply does. And they had white bunnies! And they had Guineas and Quail and Turkeys!
Although, are these Guineas or Quail? They are lavender colored.

What about these? Are these Quail? These aren't using a red light so are easier to see. And a different color.

Turkey Poults!!! My hubby almost impulse bought/talked me in to a couple of these. :smack I talked him down though and told him that I need to do more research on caring for them etc. Besides, they are the meat Turkeys, Broad Breasted Whites.

And look what they just got in! Stupid wire! I couldn't get a good picture. They had pot bellied piglets!!! I was talking to them and the black one on the far left would wiggle its little tail every time I did. The others pretty much ignored me. The pink one looked up at me for a min before yawning and laying back down to nap. I was like a kid in a candy shop. We didn't buy anything because we really don't NEED anything new right now. But that didn't stop me from looking. :love:love:love

Oh my goodness! So many little cuties! I would have ended up with an Arc full.

I know! It was tough to leave without anything. They didn't have any ducks in. Which I don't need any of those either since I have ducklings but.... they had advertised Magpies! Which I would have wanted to get. I like the look of them. I would have been VERY tempted. So it's a good thing they didn't have any lol.

These are Pearl Gray Guinea keets.
Ok, that is what they had advertised but the sign just wasn't quite over them so I wasn't sure. Is there a type of Guinea that comes in a lavender color? One sign said "Rare Guinea" but offered no other explanation. And there was a Quail sign either in between or right next to the 2 tubs of keets so I'm just not sure.

Well, there are a Lavender Guinea so that is probably what it is. The red light makes it difficult to see their color. It looked completely grey/lavender to me. Almost to the point that I'd call it blue. Interesting birds. I wouldn't mind having a few of those. The description says they make very good "watch dogs", great with keeping snakes away and consuming grasshoppers and ticks and bugs. And that they are very easy to take care of. After 4 weeks of age they pretty much take care of themselves and will "hustle for their food". But they aren't cold hardy. So does that just mean they need a good shelter they can go in to get out of the cold? I need to do research. :caf

There are Lavender guineas. Lavender keets have the same head pattern as the Pearl Grays but it is dark bluish gray stripe and their overall color is a bluish gray.

You need to find a different source for your guinea information.

Read the thread Raising Guinea Fowl 101 and pay particular attention to posts made by @PeepsCA .

Guineas are noise makers. They are not good watchdogs because they can go off for any number of reasons that they only know. The noise can continue long after they have forgotten what they were hollering about. The cause of the noise may be as simple as you wearing a different color than you normally wear. In my case, my guineas often go off if they see me approaching from a different than normal spot.

They are excellent tick eaters and are very hilarious when chasing grasshoppers. They will kill and eat small animals. They may or may not go after snakes. My turkeys do a better job keeping snakes away than do my guineas.

They are a flock bird. I never recommend anyone getting fewer than 10. It is best to raise them separately from chickens. They need much more "personal" space than do chickens.

They are cold hardy. They need to be in a secure coop at night to protect them from predators.

There are photos of guinea keets and adult guineas scattered throughout my album.

From what I have heard they are very loud/noisy birds so that might get annoying! Lol unless you don’t mind that.

Excellent to know. Thank you so much!
