I have a silly question.. google isn’t helping.
I just opened a brand new gallon of Arizona sweet tea and took a big gulp before I realized it was rancid. Almost tasted like ginger beer, or alcoholic or something.
The plastic lid seal wasn’t broken, but it had air in the top instead of being a vacuumed seal. I should’ve poured it out as soon as I saw that.

For those that preserve stuff, is this a thing that can happen with improperly sealed liquid? Or did I just poison myself lol.

Sounds like your jug of tea got exposed to heat while in transit to your store.
You will be fine. Plastic jug tea gets an off taste when exposed to heat just like brewed tea gets a tannic taste after sitting out on the counter for a day. Glass bottles are better.

I have a weird neurological thing where I sometimes smell nasty things that aren’t there. It’s almost never actually a real smell.. except when it is.
