I put butter in the pie too. A healthy dotting. I've done the egg and milk wash too. I like the look of the eggs wash, but the flavor of the butter.
I do prefer egg wash on specific types of bread, though.
I'm too lazy to make up a wash for a single pie. Now I just sprinkle some Sucralose on the crust.

I think I usually put about 1/3 cup brown sugar in an apple pie, provided the apples are sweet enough. Plus, I like to drizzle honey on top before putting the cap on. Do you use Sucralose and regular sugar in your pies?
 
I'm not sure what is even remotely strange about mixing cream and butter to brush on a pie or other pastries. I mean, it's kinda standard practice in most baking. Baking at a little place on the water was my first ever real job! I learned a lot there. I'll bet Elko's pie was rad... mine was better because it had real sugar in it.
Your special sauce just looks weird...to me.
