I think they are just a dark color fat thing.

No this is actually not a park.
This is just a little pond at the beginning of the neighborhood with a walking trail around it.

I'm almost to the end of the pond where the mini says he saw a beaver yesterday.

If the critter had a large flat tail it's a beaver.
But it's most likely a nutria. They have a long skinny tail.
