The reason is to prevent filling the shed with smoke. If there isn't an opening below the shed,and you toss the smoke bomb down the hole, it shouldn't come up iin the shed. If you toss the smoke bomb under the shed, it will probably smoke up the shed. It will also not do anything to solve your problem.

The smoke bomb needs to go down the groundhog hole. If smoke is seen coming out somewhere else that hole also needs sealed. Tossing a smoke bomb underneath your greenhouse isn't going to do anything to solve the problem.
Ah okay, makes sense. Good point. Trouble is I don’t know where his hole is. Guess I should locate it first.
