Doesn't have to be. You can toss all the ingredients into the mixing bowl at once and get good muffins out of the batter.

The so-called "Muffin Method" is when you mix the wet ingredients in one bowl, the dry in another, and then pour the wet over the dry and mix together using as few strokes as possible.
Ohhhh I see. I can’t remember if I did that or not last time I made them because I haven’t made any in forever haha

Actually not quite. First comes the creaming of the sugars and fats (shortening, lard, butter or oil), addition of eggs and then the addition of the liquids followed by combining the dry ingredients last.
