There are pros and cons to colony or cage style. A major con for colony style is unless you keep the buck separate, you will never be sure when babies are due, and the does will end up bred again as soon as they have a litter, which can cause them to lose body condition and may result in smaller, less healthy litters. If you are breeding for meat, keeping good records and having a separate cage for each rabbit will allow you to track each rabbit's production and make decisions based on actual numbers instead of what you think you remember.

I would have the buck separated from the does and only have him breed with them when I wanted so I could keep track of that better.
Or if I kept them in cages I would want them to have lots of fresh air and then to run around.
