Bury it in the ant hill.
The ants crawl up the shovel and get me. Not pleasant. Remember, I have heavy, sticky, hard clay soil. Not the light, sandy stuff. Digging post holes is a chore. Pull chunk out of hole, scrape it off the digger. Repeat. Same for shovels. The shovel weighs 5 times as much with the stuff sticking to it.

Break it up with a pick first. I grew up on stone filled clay soils. I really appreciate the sand dune I currently live on.

Have you sharpened your shovel? You can rub it with wax to make it slicker.

yes, shovels are sharpened. No stones here. We have to import those to make the yard look pretty. The pick just makes a hole in the clay. When you put the shovel it, it mashes it back together. You can wait for it to dry out to work better, I suppose. Wouldn't take more than 5 years and there is bound to be another drought eventually.

Will get my crayons out and color the shovel. Oiling it helped, but didn't last long.

Don't forget that I have first hand experience with the big red ants crawling up inside of my pants.
I don't always see the fire ants when they crawl up my boot, but I feel them when they find me. Do the red ants bite as bad as these?
