Artemis realized Amy's outlook on the whole situation was not the same as her own. She dried the dishes and set them neatly on the counter while waiting Amy's return knowing the conversation had not yet ended. When she did return, Artemis found a chair to seat herself so that it would be clear Amy had her full attention.
Amy took a deep breath then began. "I have known the Poles the majority of my life and our families were close. Heavens, we might as well have been family for all the time we spent together," she chuckled. "But eight years ago, everything changed--eight years may seem like plenty of time to forget everything and forget them, but not when you put it into perspective and realize that I've known them twenty. My father and older siblings had been passing information to contenders, and before my parents could settle things, my elder sister ran away to join them. It was like a stick of dynamite was lit and a huge chain reaction followed." Amy stared blankly at Artemis as everything became so real again. "My mom, needless to say, was terribly upset. She and dad would go late into the night discussing their situation. Having your family split in a war isn't easy, and eventually my dad and brother, Ben, moved out. The same week, the Pole's parents died in a house fire which was, in case you're thinking what I think you're thinking, due to the stove being left on. With my house half empty, my mom naturally had Jaxson and Vanessa move in with us." Amy paused to pour herself a cup of coffee. "Do you want some?" She offered, pot still in hand.
