Artemis realized Amy's outlook on the whole situation was not the same as her own. She dried the dishes and set them neatly on the counter while waiting Amy's return knowing the conversation had not yet ended. When she did return, Artemis found a chair to seat herself so that it would be clear Amy had her full attention.
(haha sure..)

Amy took a deep breath then began. "I have known the Poles the majority of my life and our families were close. Heavens, we might as well have been family for all the time we spent together," she chuckled. "But eight years ago, everything changed--eight years may seem like plenty of time to forget everything and forget them, but not when you put it into perspective and realize that I've known them twenty. My father and older siblings had been passing information to contenders, and before my parents could settle things, my elder sister ran away to join them. It was like a stick of dynamite was lit and a huge chain reaction followed." Amy stared blankly at Artemis as everything became so real again. "My mom, needless to say, was terribly upset. She and dad would go late into the night discussing their situation. Having your family split in a war isn't easy, and eventually my dad and brother, Ben, moved out. The same week, the Pole's parents died in a house fire which was, in case you're thinking what I think you're thinking, due to the stove being left on. With my house half empty, my mom naturally had Jaxson and Vanessa move in with us." Amy paused to pour herself a cup of coffee. "Do you want some?" She offered, pot still in hand.

Artemis listened to Amy completely, taking in every word that she spoke. Her opinion of Jaxson remained the same, but she tried with her whole being to understand Amy's story the way she did. "No, thank you." Artemis smiled softly in thought, to lighten the mood. She quietly waited for Amy to finish her story.
(I did, and I like the mystery behind everything, but I should warn you that I watch The Pinkertons every night ;) )

"We need to talk. We needed to talk years ago, but I continued putting it off thinking it for the best, but I can see it didn't do anyone any good."
Jaxson nodded but didn't say anything. He waited for her to continue as he sipped his tea slowly.
"What do you remember of that year?" Vanessa asked, somewhat vaguely.
Jaxson sighed and set his glass down. So that's what this was about. "After our parents died, we moved in with the Westons. They were more than good to us. Mrs. Weston treated you like the daughter she had had, but after the deaths, you cut off all communication. You cut off family. That's what they were to us, you know," he said quietly.
Vanessa had thought as much. That's how he, then sixteen, had perceived everything. "Do you know why?" She asked.
"Uh no," Jaxson replied. He had then thought Vanessa feared she would lose him to Amy, which was of course ridiculous since it was never like that between him and the youngest Weston, but Vanessa had a way of twisting things to her satisfaction.

Simeon didn't answer, just pressed his shirt against his forehead. He couldn't decide what to do with himself.

"How do you feel?" Brooklyn inquired, her attention still directed on the traffic ahead of her. They needed to make it as far away as possible.

Amy put the pot away then pulled over another chair for herself. Once seated, she continued. "Vanessa immediately filled the gap that my sister had left. She helped around the house, so much to the point that there was very little for me, my other sis, and Jaxson to do. When my mom needed someone to confide in, she didn't turn to me. No, she turned to Nessie." Amy had a look of distaste now. She never could figure out what her mom saw in the older Pole, but they had their secrets and that was the fact of it. "We may have lost half our family to the contenders, but we gained family as well. My mom had Vanessa and my other sister to turn to, but I had Jaxson. He was like a brother. When we received news that Dad and Ben had been imprisoned, then Dad, to put it lightly, disposed of, Jaxson was there for me. He and I somehow managed to get through security to go see my Dad the day before. That's how I know about the forced interrogations, my Dad told me about it in the brief time we talked." The last sentence was her way of telling Artemis that she had never experienced what Artemis had been through with Mythe, but that she knew how bad it was and that it happened.
Amy fidgeted in her chair as she determined how much to let on about the next part. It wasn't all hers to tell, she knew. Vanessa would have to share that when she was ready to reconcile. "A month after the death, we were recuperating. And then Vanessa came home from her office with the news that Ben was to die. She was so upset about it, I remember. Mom talked long into that night with her. I suppose they were trying to see if there was a way to avoid it." Amy stood abruptly and moved the chair over so she could walk. She was so caught up in the telling that she nearly forgot Artemis was still there.

"Uh no," Jaxson replied. He had then thought Vanessa feared she would lose him to Amy, which was of course ridiculous since it was never like that between him and the youngest Weston, but Vanessa had a way of twisting things to her satisfaction.
"I cut them off because I couldn't handle it, and for your safety," Vanessa explained.
She was tearing up, Jaxson noted, and he reached a hand across to pat her shoulder gently. "Couldn't handle what?" He asked after a moment of silence.
"I couldn't handle the deaths, all of them. Our parents, Mr. Weston, then Ben." Vanessa tried to calm herself, took a deep breath. "You never saw it, but I did. Amy didn't support her mom's notions of the war. She was too much her father's daughter, and I didn't see that ending anywhere good. That's why we left, because I feared you were finding yourself too attached, and I couldn't bear to have you go through what I did."
Jaxson shook his head slowly, not understanding. He was about to argue and ask for a deeper explanation, but didn't. He knew what she meant. The diamond band on her finger wasn't their mother's.

(I don't want to do math...)

(It's a series about two detectives who have to solve murders in Kansas City after the Civil War ends.)
Artemis listened intently, until her attention was overtaken by returning memories. She knew what it was like both to wait at home for a loved one to return, who would never return and to be the one imprisoned and tortured. She trembled at one particular memory, and felt herself become emotional.

(Ah. Sounds interesting :p )

Amy resumed the story while walking from one counter to the other. "The following morning was strange; dreamlike, almost. Breakfast was quick, then Vanessa and my mom hurried out the door to see if they could intervene on Ben's behalf, but they were too late. Nessie had been lied to, I think, in order to have the execution go smoother without her pushing her way in as she did with my dad. That day went by so fast yet terribly slow. I honestly can't remember much except saying good bye to them." Amy stopped her pacing to turn to Artemis. "I felt abandoned by them; by him. He was the brother I had gained, then lost. What hurt the most was that neither he nor I were at fault and that we weren't able to contact each other. For years after I blamed Vanessa, thinking she thought the separation of us necessary." She chuckled, not out of humor but from realization. "In reality it was none of our fault. This war, if only it could be stopped. I know my story is only one of so many of people who have lost family."
