(Guys, I think my ball python has scale rot so I I'll be busier than usual trying to treat it, if I can even confirm what exactly it is. Sorry! Won't be completely gone again, of course.)
(I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looks.)

Artemis became quiet. She took a shaky breath and closed her eyes momentarily as she fought back tears. "Jaxson, I need you to tell me something that's very important." She thought of her words carefully before finishing. "Is Caden my real brother, or is he just a clone Mythe made?"
Jaxson shrugged, not that she would see it through the door. He didn't know the answer to that. He didn't know the answer to many things, and that ticked him off very much. "I-I don't know," he said. He didn't even know she had a brother until about a hour ago when he saw the boy. He leaned against the wall, kerpoung an eye out for any movement or noise that they didn't make. "Artemis, how did you get back here? Did they find you at the shop?" He still hadn't returned Amy's call, but he wanted to be able to give her details, not just hurried reassurances.

Artemis was about to direct Jaxson back to their previous conversation, when she was reminded of what happened at the shop. "They killed Jenny." She whispered solemnly.

"Who is—" Jaxson stopped himself short. Jenny, Amy's friend and employee. He scrubbed at his face. Another death to add the Amy's ever growing list. "Is that all?" He cursed himself for how heartless that sounded, but that was all he could manage to ask at the moment. Amy had called, so she was alive—an hour ago, at least.

Artemis flinched at his reply. "They're going to kill my brother if I don't tell them where the Contenders meet." Artemis choked out the words with a hardly restrained sob. "I-I don't know what to do. If I tell them the Contender's location I'll be responsible for thousands of deaths, but if I don't I'll have killed my own brother." Artemis quickly wiped a tear from her cheek, but gave up when the tears flowed freely down her face. "Jaxson, I need your help." She pleaded gently, able to humble herself enough in this moment to ask for the help of someone besides herself.

Jaxson pushed off the wall and paced in small, slow circles in front of the door. He'd heard her question, her pleading, but wasn't yet prepared to answer that. The logical thing would be to get rid of this whole situation by turning the lot of them in—Artemis, Amy, and the several he knew of that met at the shop. If Vanessa knew how much he'd helped Artemis to get out, she'd confirm this idea. He'd save her reputation and his own that way. He stopped, facing the door between him and Artemis. It was too late to save his own hide; he'd already cast his lot and was in it, for better or for worse. Probably worse. "What can I do?" He asked through the door.

Artemis listened carefully through the door, thinking that Jaxson had left when he didn't answer. "Tell me what I should. I can't make this decision on my own." She admitted meekly.

Jaxson leaned his back against the door, keeping his face near enough that she could hear him. "How about I'll find out whether Caden is a clone or not, then we go from there. Okay?" That seemed like a reasonable first step. If he was a clone and the real boy wasn't living, then what had she to fear? He rewound his thoughts. If they had a clone, then they had had the real boy, presumably. "Artemis, what happened to your brother?" He had heard only fragments of the conversation earlier; but not enough to know what this meant exactly.

Artemis gathered her thoughts enough to decide what were important details for Jaxson to know. "Caden worked with my father as a spy hidden in the C.M.I.'s ranks. When Han found out Caden was a Mira he killed my father out of anger. Even though my father didn't tell Han where Caden hid himself, when I didn't hear from him I presumed that Han found and killed him." Artemis explained as simply as she could, not knowing how much more time they would have together.

(Do you mean contender?)

Jaxson rubbed the back of his neck as he thought. "I'll see what I can find out about Caden. For now, just do your best to lay low and not irritate anyone, okay?" Not that she had an irritating disposition, but anything to rile up Han and Mythe now would just lead to more trouble. "Give them what you can without endangering anyone, including yourself."
