I really see no red but as soon as I set her down in the coop the other girls are attacking her. So shes back inside but she is wanting to be back out with her sisters
Disclaimer…nothing say should be construed as official veterinary advice. I have not performed examination nor established the requisite veterinary owner patient relationship, however generally speaking: All claws are dirty, chicken, dogs, cats, hawks, etc. even hoomans. Sorry, bad veterinary joke.
If you can get a hold of chlorhexidine spray or solution (dilute it out to a light sky blue color or even lighter) and spray or wipe the wounds if she will let you. You can do this every 4-12 or more hours as your schedule allows. Keep her separated for 5-7 days minimum ideally and longer is not wrong in my opinion, as true healing takes time, especially if its a deep wound. Of course if you are willing, its not wrong to take her to a vet if there’s a mixed animal or exotic vet option in your area.
But if you’re willing to assume the risk of you “don’t know what you don’t know” and realize that things could turn our poorly because no diagnostics or professional veterinary care is done, then all you can do is keep the wound clean and keep her separate. But it’s all ok. That’s no judgement, its just reality. And i’ll be the first to tell you that vets are not perfect. We are just humans that care for animals and the humans that love them.
Neosporin would not hurt but i wouldnt recommend this unless you can put an e. Collar on her and prevent consumption. But in reality an E. Collar is not a bad idea to prevent self trauma also in general if this is happening.
While she is going through this make sure she has access to the best nutrition and if you can find a probiotic for chickens, use that and by all means let me know. I have yet to find one.
I am going though a similar scenario so if you find a solution, let me know and i will do the same. Right now i have the battered hen in solitary but i’m thinking of it as “protective custody”. But i know she desperately wants to rejoin her flock.
