(1) Are you new to chickens?
Hi y'all! I am new to chickens; but I am taking my time to do my research before doing anything crazy. I live in a super hot area of California (zone 9a, 100F+ degrees in summer, mild winters) and I am currently looking into building a coop/run, and raising two docile/friendly hens in my backyard.
The two chicken breeds I am considering are Barred Plymouth Rocks and Olive Eggers. If you have any suggestions, books, resources or videos on how to get started with chickens do share!!
)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
My partner and I are currently landscaping my late-grandfather's property, we have a rather large backyard right next to a highway and hard-pan clay soil. We are turning the property into a California native landscape and garden, removing all the turf, and trying to make it a habitable place for local wildlife and insects.
Chickens would be a great addition into scratching up the soil, eating up buggies, and obviously their poop would do the soil a great service!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am currently a student studying in Studio Arts; specifically with oil painting. I am getting my certification to become an educator!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'd love to get to know queer folks in agriculture/gardening communities! I know they are out there, but that would be fun!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Since I started researching chickens sometime late last year; particularly for bookmarking DIY guides and coop building.
