It is a natural depression that collects runoff and the water table is so shallow that it remains full of water most of the year.

I think we call these bayous.
 
The difference is a bayou has a bottom and a slough has silt as its bottom which can be very think thick enough to jump out your boat and sink and drown. A bayou you can get out your boat and walk in mud that's usually not knee high. I wouldn't suggest testing either
This has bentonite as its bottom and is a muck that you just keep sinking into.
