I have a full-sized hen (I just adopted them a couple months ago and have no idea about the breed). I want to give her an epsom salt bath to ensure that she isn’t egg bound (she’s been acting funny). I have four little kids, so I need to be able to leave her in the bath while I take care of my babes. I saw someone cut a hole in the lid of the Tupperware container to secure the hen—my questions are: does it matter if her tail feathers are down while in the epsom salt bath? Or does it not make a difference if she is egg bound? Any recommendations for the size/dimensions of containers?

I am nervous about putting her in a bigger container with no lid—I don’t want her to be stressed and trying to fly out while unsupervised.

Thank you!

You have to stay with her and hold her.
Is she sitting hunched backed? What symptoms are you seeing?
It looks like she taking big breaths or stretching her back. I don’t notice a change in her breathing when I hold her though. She sits a lot and walks like she is stiff. I tried to take a video—is there any way to post it on this thread?

Update: I gave her an epsom salt bath and lubricated her vent with coconut oil. I didn’t feel an egg when I felt her stomach or her vent. She is in a dog crate with food and water in our basement for now. She didn’t do any of the deep breathing/stretching from the video when in the bath.

Any other ideas what it could be?

What ended up happening with her?
