🦆 The DUX has woken up! 🦆

My young Muscovy was sitting on 11 eggs to start. Some were promising but they all ended up not making it which I had to fight her for the last two eggs as when I hit them with a rock, they exploded on me. The matter was bright yellow and looked cooked!!! The top of the hen house she picked for a nest got very hot off and on I am sure so it was not a good place to nest. I am fine with it because I did not need any babies, I already have one rescue and that is enough. I only let her sit because she was vicious and wanted to play the part of Mom so badly. She would daily sit in a shallow pan of water and get damp and then return to the nest right away. Everything was done by the book but I think the place she chose was just too hot. I was worried she would cook up in the top of the Chicken house but she made it. They don't all make it but sometimes that's not a terrible thing if we already have 20 like I do.
Sorry to hear that, your duck has just chosen the wrong spot, but i am sure she will be a good momma duck once she manages to hatch out some ducklings. Muscovies are known to be in the group of best mommas in the bird world. Maybe next year? 🤞🏻

It reminds me of something like water belly. Are you certain about the ‘no anus’ thing? I’m not sure how he could make it this far, if so.
I have used soapy water to get the fluff out of the way and could not locate any opening. I would be the happiest guy on this planet if the vet could prove that i am wrong and this is just a severe case of constipation…

One of my scovies is a fantastic broody but terrible mom. I take any babies she hatches away from her.
The other day I rescued a crushed egg from her. There was blood in the nest since it wasn't ready to hatch. Put it in the incubator, kept the shell and membrane moist, and waited until the yolk was finally absorbed and baby made it's way out.
I didn't think this one would make it.

I too don't know how it could have lived this long without being able to get rid of its waste. I would have thought after a day or two it would be dead.

So, there's good news not so good news and bad news:
The good news first: The doctor went pale in his face when telling me the duckling had »some significant bowel« movement, so yes there is an anus but Ducky was so constipated that it was hard to find. Most likely the result of bad food.
The not so good news is that its not out of the woods yet. It will need a lot of exercise, good food and swimming to get everything out. Hopefully everything will straighten up while the little one is growing up.
The bad news is twohundredandsixtytwo benjamins changed ownership this evening. That means ham chese duckegg sandwiches for the rest of the month. And the ducks need to cut back on their cat-food addiction. Hopefully the garden will start to produce soon. Already had two succhini...
