1/2 acre wooded lot

well it's the first time ever he's passed on anything to me that did not pan out...I know he had just come from a couple of the other farms and maybe one of them had said something to him and he mentioned it to me because he saw me out there yanking poison oak up! I don't know...just glad that it's not possible!

I'm in the woods, built a 25'x40' run (kind of) I left most trees, ran the run fence around and weaved trees and even have a covered top...

It's possible if you have patience...I learned a few words trying to dig for my run and continued to hit roots.

BTW, trees out here are oak, hickory, pine mostly.

Good luck

When we lived in Yolo County, ( near Sacramento) Cal., a friend of mine was bitten by a snake that what turned out to be what he swore looked like a cross between a garter snake and a ratlesnake. There were plently of garter snakes ,but only very rarely was a rattlesnake ever reported. He killed it, and thinking this 2 1/2foot long appeared to have odd markings, thin body, and no fang marks (just bruising )on his leg, and rattled a barely audible warning, then immediately struck his leg. he sent it to county extention. It had a long very thin body, marking similar to a rattlesnake , only 1rattle, but NO fangs, it did have venum however. His leg swelled up and he had to get antivenum shots. A couple years later a few more showed up with similar characteristics in the same area. A mutation of a rattler or a xbred I haven't heard the verdict.

I hear ya' on learning new words from hacking through tree roots! My problem was Maples. No matter where I dug I'd hit one. I know when you hit a big one with post-hole diggers it sure sends a nasty shock through the old wrists! Really cool setup you have there. Nicely done!

My chickens have access to about an acre cleared, but rather spend their time at the "forest fringe" under the trees, under cars, on the porch, or in the car port. I think that if you could keep the trees, and clear some of the underbush, it would be ideal. Trees can provide some shelter from the elements and gives the birds a less open feeling so they can relax. Mine tend to relax in the shrubbery more so than open areas where preds can spot them easier.

I like the plan. I think... are you going to multi-use all four sections? Or give the chickens two lots and garden/ woodlot the other two? Pics please! Either way, lucky chickens.

My house is on five acres, of which about four are wooded. The chicken coop is right on the edge of the woods and I've found that my birds spend almost all their time in the woods or under the trees in the yard. I've seen a chicken spend it's entire day at a single dead log eating spiders, ants, grubs, and caterpillars. They'll eat greens from the lawn but they'll also eat the leaves of the shrubs in the understory. The shade keeps them cool, sheltered from the wind and rain, and they tend to do all their dust bathing in the woods, leaving my grass in better condition.

I say keep the trees!
