I hatched out 23 quail last month.
I have 2 roos with 6 hens and I've seen them mating lately.
So I set 40 more quail eggs in the incubator 3 weeks ago. Out of 40 only 1 hatched. I cracked open the rest today and none were fertile. Weird.
Anyway all my quail are brown and this little baby turned out yellow.

The only advise I can give is that I hd 2 roos i one pen and simply was not getting eggs. When I finally noticed my mistake I pulled one out and added him to the supper pen. Now that breeder pen is laying well.
Maybe remove one and pen him separate for a few weeks then switch them????

Yellow chicks (will be white when its full grown) means that somewhere down the line your browns had a white or two intermixed. I visit a local quail farm every once in awhile, and every couple of weeks they get a yellow chick from brown parents (it's about 1 in 10,000 chicks!)

Actually, it looks like a golden. Golden is normally dominant over brown, but if bred together (brown and golden) 2 of 3 chicks would be golden. So I don't know if the brown from this breeding would be a carrier of golden or not. That baby looks like it has stripes on its back. If so, it's a golden, not a white.
With the change in season, it messes the eggs up sometimes. This past spring, I saw mine mating quite a lot. It still took at least a month after they started laying/mating before the eggs were sellable. Maybe 1 of 5 eggs would develop before then.

I recently had a disappointingly small hatch very similar to you- but my small hatch rate was due to a temp spike (up to 110!) on day 15 in the bator. Very sad stuff. I had 6 hatch, and every day a few of them wouldn't make it until I only have one little tough cookie left (thinking of naming it "nemo")

I put a stuffed animal in the brooder with the survivor so he/she wouldn't feel alone, and it's so cute the little quail cuddling with a stuffed puppy. Sometimes I also leave a soft radio on so it won't feel alone. It is now 8 days old.

Good luck with yours! hopefully you'll hatch some more out next time. Sounds like it just takes the roos awhile to be "effective"

It's just odd that I hatched 23/34. Started collecting eggs as soon as they hatched and set them 7-9 days later only to have 1 out of 40 eggs fertile.

That means that 1/6 hens had to at least be mated. And she had to have laid 6.6 eggs.
So I should have had at least 6 eggs fetile.

It all don't make much sense to me.

I set up my egg turner in my room which is kept around 70* and collected eggs everyday for about 7-9 days (till I had 40) and then set the turner in the bator.

It makes sense if she was bred on day 4 or so, then only the last 1-2 eggs would've been fertle. My roo Platypus (he's one of 2 named quail) was unskilled in the romeo skills, I set a full batch to have most unfertle, now he's got his mojo on. Some males are just slow on the uptake.
