Black Australorps. Docile, many are friendly, lots of big brown eggs, meaty enough to be good dual purpose, and my one roo was protective of his flock but not mean to me. I can handle my hen without a problem, and some of my 8 week olds jump onto my lap and settle down to be petted.

Or Speckled Sussex... but they are a bit small....

Standard Cochins....Love the big fluffy chickens, decent layers of pinkish eggs, gentle and friendly, good mommas and all weather hardy.

I would have to say silkie just because they are cool looking a sweet but if I had another choice it would be the saipan jungle fowl for looks

I'm with cw and Mandalina - BARRED ROCKS

They are consistent layers, sweet and curious with lots of personality. If I could only have one breed it would definitely be Barred Rocks. Plus they're pretty - when people come over they always comment on the "black and white striped" ones.
