Our hen, just a few weeks shy of 2 years old, was suddenly sick and died before the day was out. She walked leaning right, as if drunk. Isolated and medicated her, but she seized after several hours and died. Necropsy diagnosed colibacillosis.

The hens have a good sized yard area to roam, and I clean it on the average every other day. Had been using deep litter method in the coop, under the roost bars; now I'll go back to regular clean and resupply. We do bleach the water can weekly. Hens get fresh greens nearly every single day.

It's been a week since Brandi died. I am worried for our other hens, and the chicks we added a couple days ago. Should I medicate them all as a preventative; and if so, with what? Will I need to withhold eggs; and if so, how long? Is there something obvious I am missing, that I need to modify to reduce chances of a repeat? Brandi was one of our original chicks, so we still have much to learn coming up on two years. Please share your thoughts.
