Update to Sudden Death of My Flock

Our guard was up. Our neighbors guards were up
I don’t think anyone was implying otherwise. I think that was a response to my comment about ducks being carriers. I don’t know anything about ducks but I am very surprised at the wildlife commission’s response to your original call. I’ve heard horror stories about them euthanizing entire flocks within days of reporting (there is at least one thread about it on here from an outbreak years ago) and that was without anything close to the losses you’re experiencing. Sorry you are dealing with this. Sounds like a nightmare

That’s insane. I’m sorry you had to go through it. Hopefully, it wasn’t close to your property.
It was ON my property. In my open chicken pasture. Thankfully it was mammalian, not avian, so very unlikely to affect my birds (though we were very concerned about possible rabies), and fortunately none of my other animals were able to get to it. It was in really bad shape and not able to really move much, but vultures hadn't seen it yet. It was dispatched and carcass burnt. We handled the situation as best we could without actually touching it (shovels, tractor, gloves, etc- basically used common sense) to make sure that there was the least possibility that it would affect anything else. But very frustrating that no one cared or was concerned. I'm not sure what is going on with the wildlife department, I assume not enough budget and understaffed and over worked, like many places. I had to call several times as their phones were not even working properly, and then they just didn't care, didn't have anyone near, just told us we could take care of it ourselves. Actually told us we could bag and put the carcass in the TRASH. But it's very frustrating when the government has scared the be-jesus out of everyone over the bird flu, birds are dying and being destroyed, and then when someone has a problem, it's just crickets. I'm incredibly sorry that you and your neighbors have had to deal with this. Even if it was something else, the numbers lost and wide area suggest contagion, and someone SHOULD care. Sadly, in many cases the system is just broken and doesn't work at all. I'm so sorry.

Our guard was up. Our neighbors guards were up. They’ve been raising chickens for decades without issue. We’ve never had sick ducks, eggs stuck, or any other issue with our chickens. The only thing I would have done differently is shoot every Muscovy duck that set foot on my property.
I'm sorry if that came across as a "dig" or accusation. That was not where I was going with that. My intent was to let people know that ducks are not immune to the bird flu, even though many don't show symptoms. The Muscovies are dying, but they aren't the only issue. Even if we took out very Muscovy, healthy or not, the carriers would still be there.

It's a "Typhoid Mary" type of situation ... and it stinks for everybody! The authorities likely think they're preventing a mass panic by keeping the extent under wraps. In reality, they're adding to the problem by not letting people know what's really going on.

We have it here, too, but on a much smaller scale. It's in our local bald eagle population. When that came to light, many of us near the river scaled way back on our flock sizes. We pretty much stopped free-ranging altogether and tightened up our housing. Not even a songbird (usually not carriers) can easily get in or out of my coop or run - and it's all covered, so there is less of a chance of "solid waste deposits" being dropped from flyovers. It's not a guarantee that our birds won't get the flu, but hopefully, the precautions will help. So far, so good!

They never had mites, lice, marek, Newcastle, worms, or fly strike. Those chickens were cared for, and there’s nothing we could have done except to just lock them away. If anyone looked on the map, our county and neighboring counties has never had bird flu outbreaks in over 3 years. The closest reported infection was over 2 hours away. It was for a different type of duck that’s not found in our area. I’ve never seen that type of duck, and I’ve lived here for 30+ years. Either way, I lost my whole farm, and my place is quarantined, so probably can’t have chicken for months now. I wouldn’t plan on having them until the summer anyways. I wish fwc warned the public of the RECENT catastrophic deaths of muscovies less than 30 minutes away, but whatever.
Can you let the local news know what's up? They might follow up and warn people.

I posted earlier on here and social media on what I can do. Well, I lost more than 25 chickens in 4-5 days. I have only 2 roosters and 1 hen, which hasn’t moved from her perch. Our neighbors found a bunch of dead Muscovy ducks in our area. Our neighbors’ chickens are also starting to die off. We contacted our states wildlife commission to advise them of the situation. We were hoping they would come out and test the deceased bird, but no. They told us we had to find a vet or lab to test. My husband drove over an hour away to a lab, and we were told we would receive the results within 30-45 days. We received the preliminary report today, which basically said the chickens died from illness and listed that they really suffered. Their respiratory, circulatory, immune systems were severely impacted. They had organ enlargement, bleeding vessels. Their lungs were damaged and filled with fluids. They clearly suffered.

Also, I looked up dead Muscovy ducks on google. And guess what? Less than a week ago, a ton of ducks started to die off in a pond less than an hour away from us. Some random lady reported it, but they’re reportedly blaming pesticide. However, the ducks didn’t die off all at once. 1-2 ducks died, then several, and then a ton more over the course of a few days. The wildlife commission took samples of the ducks a week ago, but there’s been no updates. Had I know this was happening, I would have kept my chickens in their coup for most of the time or killed off Muscovys to protect our babies.

If you’re living in central Florida, please be aware that there’s something killing off chickens, turkeys incredibly fast. You’ll think it’s from something else bc initially the first chickens didn’t have the symptons like the others now. My guess is that the disease killed the weaker ones first and didn’t have to damage all their systems to kill.
That is absolutely terrifying! Are you in a big Agriculture area where they may have over sprayed crops with something? I am so sorry. This makes me sick and honestly, though I try to avoid my tin foil hat tendencies...makes me very suspicious. There seems to be an awful lot of negative propoganda about the "dangers" of raising our own chickens. Just saying! Please dont give up trying to find the answers! Condolences my fellow bird lover.

This is really sad.
Are you anywhere near Marion county? If you are, when you're ready, I could help you with chicks / started birds (depending on when) if you like blue/ green eggs.
In any case, I really wish the case tracking worked at least as well as it did a few years ago.

Sadly many news sources in FL have been bought up by monied parties and they are no longer conveying the full story. I've been to... events... all year which they minimize dramatically, meanwhile we have thousands of people out on the street in our rural southern town.
Some news items that would have triggered exclamations a few years ago are now conveyed as if it's totally normal and nothing to see here. Strange days.

Understood - and it's not just Florida. I've been to some of those "events" myself and it's amazing how invisible they are. Our trust in SO many things has been undermined so badly that we don't trust what we can't see or touch. Scary, scary times.
